Value Is EverythingSeptember 2, 2013 at 16:28 #450113Superb Ginge – well done mate!!!
Belated thank you to you Joni and Nathan for your comments on my one/two in the Juddmonte International. Been busy with a few other things over the past week or so.
Feel a bit fortunate with Toronado going wrong and Al Kazeem not showing his best. Both Declaration Of War and Trading Leather are tough, genuine and consistent types (latter needs firm ground), but neither really improved on previous form. Hillstar also not as effective at the 10f; so it was not a vintage renewal and should not be considered as being top Group 1 form.
It’s interesting that Al Kazeem travelled in snatches. Coming back on the bridle, looking a certainty to beat Trading Leather; before not finding as much as once seemed likely. Those who dismissed Mukhadram(a similarly genuine street fighter)’s chance of getting back up when interfered with/passed in the Eclipse – might like to think again. Yes, Al Kazeem was the probable winner, but Doyle’s "careless riding" made sure of winning.
Hopefully the three York principles DOW, TL and AK will meet up again in the Irish Champion. If current prices of 5/2, 5/1 and 4/1 remain after final decs… I certainly will
not
be backing DOW, probably be on Al Kazeem this time if his trainer is in reasonable form at the time. Although The Fugue may also be considered.
Value Is EverythingSeptember 2, 2013 at 17:14 #450115On the
19th
August I wrote a lengthy piece explaining my thoughts on the Juddmonte International, with 2 selections @ 16/1 and 7.8/1.
On the
20th
August Gordie Boy (in Horse Racing) moans
"from reading your thread, its all about betting in numbers, you never discuss your reasons for your selections all 5 of them on average".
On the
21st
August my 2 International selections Declaration Of War and Trading Leather finish one/two.
Some people are only concerned with one horse, their horse, their selection. Fair enough, but it is quite easy for them to write a short piece on that one or two horse/s; especially if unconcerned about price.
For me, price (value) is everything and every horse’s ability/temperament/way of racing directly affects chances of every other horse in a race. It is therefore very difficult if not impossible for me to give a fair assessment of my selections without going through the whole race. I also put negative comments about my selections, with comments like "Declaration Of War is probably not up to this class", you’d think I was tipping it to lose!
Unfortunately unlike some, most of my bets are "day of race", or at least night before. If explaining my point of view I run the risk of missing prices on other races, needing to study first.
I’ll write an assessment only if I have time.
