On a point of value surely Turtle Bowl has to be the one. Ramonti only beat him a neck at Royal Ascot and he beat Geroge Washington in the same race. Last time out at Deauville he went down by only 3 lengths to the supposed best horse on turf anywhere at the moment Manduro. Trip and going suit.
Not saying he’ll win today but at 12/1 on the exchanges I think he’s massive value compared to the prices of the front 2.
September 9, 2007 at 10:20 #114117Unusually for Aiden O’Brien he somewhat over hyped the horse last year, so our expectations were always going to be high. Remember the horse that was described as ‘the next Desert Orchid’ [can’t remember his name at the moment] The poor animal was never going to live up to that one.I personally feel really sorry for George and hope his fellow athletes arn’t laughing at him behind his back…..[anthropomorphising again, should never have read Black Beauty] mo

I thought Kauto Star did ok
September 9, 2007 at 11:47 #114135the new Desert Orchid – [having ploughed through piles of racing and football outlook annuals] Coulton………..who?????
September 9, 2007 at 15:38 #114159That was a bit of a "nothing" performance by GW.
Over the season he’s been a poor 2nd (or worse) to Ramonti.

September 9, 2007 at 15:47 #114161back to the paddock – 49 blanks and a bullseye is better than running him into the ground and would be considerably more fun for him and maybe even more profitable ?
September 10, 2007 at 09:22 #114264I thought that was a great run by George Washington and a top job done by the jockey,
QEII and Champion Stakes sewn up…maybe even BC Classic.
September 10, 2007 at 09:47 #114273In all honesty, I can’t see George Washington winning a group race again. I fancied Darjina strongly yesterday and backed her accordingly. It may have been more advisable for Fallon to have ridden George Washington closer to the pace, but even then, I don’t think he would have beaten the very good French filly.

It’s a little surprising TRFers haven’t seen fit to enter into some…er constructive debate concerning Fallon’s ride and the turn of foot GW displayed in his making up significant ground on two G1 winners from an impossible position.
Or were the front two tiring and slowing hence, as is so often the case, the ‘turn of foot’ a mirage?
Sectionals?
September 10, 2007 at 10:24 #114276My thoughts about Fallon too, but might also have been that he couldnt get him up with the pace.
Certainly something missing now and those that feel he was overrated (not me…. but perhaps balance of form is looking less wonderful) will feel vindicated
One win in the last seven now…
September 10, 2007 at 11:07 #114283I look at it this way, if I had a breeding empire and needed to win just one race, which of these 4 would it be:
Prix du Moulin
QEII
Champion Stakes
BCClassicI would put the Prix du Moulin as least important of the quartet, a nice stepping stone to one of the others, in the same vein as we now see the Prix Foy/Niel used for the Arc, in effect virtual non events and cannot be taken at face value.
September 10, 2007 at 13:22 #114307What I found quite remarkable was that while George was being hammered into 6/4 from 15/8 on Betfair pre-race he was freely available on screen at 7/4 in the Ladbrokes shop I was frequenting….and as he peaked at 2.36/38/40 on Betfair, Labrokes wern’t budging from 6/4.
You don’t often see the bookies offering odds at a full point above Betfair in my experience.

Which means it smells of fish – maybe it was a stepping stone as UM suggests?
KF said after the race that had he not got boxed in he would have won but, much as admire him as a jockey, I have watched the replay a few times and can’t really see where he had much of a problem.
Anybody else see it his way?September 10, 2007 at 13:44 #114314Ive watched it and hes talking garbage
Even if this was a "stepping stone" , does anyone expect him to improve siginificantly from this?

Yes
September 10, 2007 at 13:46 #114316Have to agree.
It would improve from that even if my granny got the leg up next time.September 10, 2007 at 13:58 #114320Why?
Seems to have lost a little something to me. Granted the ride wasnt wonderful and the ladbrokes market is interesting, but i would find it hard to back him against the first two next time out
One win in seven now….
