Coolmore may well have commitments to mare owners which can only be resolved by fielding a suitable replacement.I’m sure they are more gutted than any of us.
March 10, 2007 at 19:46 #43106Depends on the problem.  If it is short-term physical problem that can be fixed once a proper diagnosis has been made then George should be able to resume his stud career next season.  Would be great to see him back in training, but if he’s just struggling to adjust to life at stud then that would probably the worst thing for him.
Sad when the demands of a greater power overtake the interests of the sport, but that is the price that sometimes has to be paid.
Would you rather have a world without all of the great horses Coolmore have produced?
March 10, 2007 at 19:48 #43107I haven’t seen confirmation that GW was being returned to training as part of HRE’s retirement. Take it he will now be cut to sort out his temperament?
March 10, 2007 at 19:54 #43108Gelding would a very drastic decision at this stage – it doesn’t sound like they completely understand the problem.
He may need more time, or it could be something operable. Either way they would have to be very sure that he is completely infertile before gelding – would be a very expensive mistake to make!
March 10, 2007 at 20:10 #43109Indeed Sal, this would only have come to light around now….his mares would all be scanned at this stage and clearly not in foal. There are numerous reasons for this and their tests will be thorough.
As for Holy Roman Emperor being retired, Coolmore had to do something pretty drastic…breeders had booked their mares to GW for some time now. Needless to say HRE’s fee will be considerably less than GW’s.
March 10, 2007 at 20:12 #43110Can I retire and deputise for George Clooney?
March 10, 2007 at 20:57 #43111I understand all the points regarding replacing Gw but was talking purely as a racing fan. However if George comes back into training then that would be fantastic
March 10, 2007 at 21:01 #43112We don’t yet know the nature of GW’s fertility problems.
1. He could have congenital sperm abnormalities, like Cigar.
2. He could have an extremely low sperm count, like Assault.
3. He could be impotent, "gay", if you prefer.
4. He could be suffering from some kind of viral or bacterial infection.
5. He could be sexually immature, and be ok in a year or so’s time, like Honeyway.
As for "Coolmore may well have commitments to mare owners which can only be resolved by fielding a suitable replacement"….
Well, no.
While most inconvenient for mare owners, they just have to go and book another stallion. If it was good enough for Tesio it should be more than good enough for Coolmore.
March 10, 2007 at 21:04 #43113Guess thats why Coolmore are as successful as they are then.
March 10, 2007 at 21:20 #43114In hindsight I dare say they are wishing they hadn’t leased Rock of Gibraltar to Japan.
March 10, 2007 at 22:29 #43116Major leap of faith to imagine GW coming back to his best if he does indeed ever make it to the track.
March 10, 2007 at 22:54 #43120Would imagine if he is infertile they would race him again but in the states or Far East where the prize money is massive.
March 11, 2007 at 16:51 #43124Champion Hurdle 2010
I’d love to see the horse out on track again.
March 12, 2007 at 22:10 #1093I was pondering this. If his infertility is permanent you’d imagine they would race him again.
But, realistically, he’s no good to Coolmore really any more if that is the case and would they really want him racing and dominating a miling division and putting their new hopes in the shade?
March 12, 2007 at 22:24 #45137They could sell him to the States in that case, or school him over hurdles?
I wonder what the deal with the insurance company is? Their hands may be forced somewhat? I’m sure someone here might know…
March 13, 2007 at 06:45 #45139Well if he is infertile what do they lose from racing him?
Sorry Corm what did you say Coolmores hopes were from the older horses; I can’t see any! (Rail Link)
March 13, 2007 at 11:08 #45141What do you mean by ‘rail link’? Confused..
