Surely your sample size for ‘ordinary horses’ will be far higher than G1 horses. Do you have any statistics to show that a higher percentage of ‘ordinary’ horses can ‘come back from a long break’ than Group 1 horses can?
June 15, 2007 at 13:06 #64694I think that the readiness of a horse coming back from a break depends on 4 things:
(1) the training methods used by the trainer
(2) the competence of the trainer
(3) whether the preperation time has been adequate and uninterrupted
(4) the nature of the horse
IMO, there’s no question that AOB can get them ready FTO if he’s given the opportunity and if the comeback race is the real target (i.e. not a prep).
I also believe that GW is a horse that is able to turn up 100% race fit after a break.
So, I believe the fitness question will rest on whether AOB’s had the opportunity to prepare the horse properly.

June 15, 2007 at 13:33 #64695I get the feeling that this will be a case of ‘hindsight is 20/20 vision’ no matter how GW runs.
If he dots up "…of course AOB would have him ready and he is a class above etc….".
If he runs ok with out winning but showing promise "…of course he would have needed the run etc…" .
If he runs badly or goes mental in the paddock or on the way to post or tries to mount the rostrum before the starter can. "….we knew he was highly strung and having been at stud etc…..".
Either way there could be as much discussion after the event as prior.
June 15, 2007 at 14:30 #64696This’ll be the Aidan O’Brien who admitted that Oratorio had a setback in his prep for the Champion Stakes then?

actually he scoped badly the week of the race, O’Brien said this befor the race
June 15, 2007 at 16:49 #64698I don’t believe he thought Istabraq would run to his best in his final Champion Hurdle.
DJ, obviously not or I’d be able to cite them. As I said, I can only go by my figures for the races over many years and my theory is based on those.
I agree with a lot of what Steve says but I remain to be convinced that an established 126 horse can run to 126 first time up in a new season. A 136 horse can probably run to 126 but I doubt it could run to 136.
he won’t need to run to a 126..
June 16, 2007 at 01:23 #64700I’ll be taking on GW next week at the price. I’ve backed Ramonti each way.I was hugely impressed with his run in the Lockinge, where he failed to settle for the first half mile but was going on well at the finish. For me, any doubt about a 5/4 chance is too much. I find the team tactics for Godolphin idea a bit strange though- Ramonti likes to lead and I hope he does, so what his stablemate does is surely a bit irrelevant.
June 19, 2007 at 15:56 #64703Did anyone buy any money then?
June 19, 2007 at 15:57 #64704I think ur jealous because he beat u easily at Ascot last year

June 19, 2007 at 17:01 #64709I think George ran to form.

We all know team tactics did for me that day!
June 19, 2007 at 18:56 #64712team tactics? the other ballydoyle horses might have ensured a good gallop but librettist was never in it from coming off the bend that day, was beaten by other godolphin runner. George Washington is head and shoulders above the rest of the field today on his best form. to suggest he ran to form today is rubbish.
June 19, 2007 at 19:58 #64713The horse pulled like a train. GW has so much talent, but has a wild head to go with it. I still dunno how the books managed to get him in at odds on?? Now THAT is buying money ;)
June 20, 2007 at 08:25 #64714I think George ran to form.
Surprised your not calling it a career best effort….naturally enough a horse is going to produce its very best after pulling for a 2-3 furlongs!
You obviously didn’t watch the race, no pace and he was pulling the hands of MJ for half of the race.
