Sad news that Generous has passed away today. <!– m –>http://www.racingpost.com/news/live.sd?event_id=1032251<!– m –>
January 15, 2013 at 13:24 #426367His Derby, Irish Derby and King George wins with Alan Munro in the saddle were outstanding. Remember him with great affection and those Dark Green silks of his owner Fahd Salman. Suave Dancer who was runner up to him in the Irish Derby got his revenge in the Arc. If you can find a youtube clip of his Irish Derby win it’s well worth a look. Shuttled to Japan and NZ as a sire but sired on 15 Group winners.
January 15, 2013 at 13:49 #426371I was a Suave Dancer fan at the time but I admit Generous was the better horse.
Doesn’t seem like five minutes ago. R.I.P. Generous.
January 15, 2013 at 15:31 #426384Sad news, he was the most lovely looking horse and an exceptional one to boot. Rather sad the international handicappers dropped his rating by a lb on the same day he died.
January 15, 2013 at 15:35 #426385Very underrated horse and one of the better winners of the Derby RIP
January 15, 2013 at 18:11 #426420Really sad to hear this news.
R.I.P. old fellow.January 15, 2013 at 20:49 #426447Outstanding Derby winner, won the best Irish Derby I’ve seen against the brilliant Suave Dancer and then put in an outstanding winning performance in the King George.
There are very few 1m 4f horses that could have beaten Generous during the summer of 1991.
RIP

A view also held by former professional ( and very successful ) punter, the late Alex Bird, who commented that he ( Generous ) was pulling a train entering the Ascot straight and won as he pleased, adding that this was possibly the most impressive KG&QE winning performance he had seen, eclipsing even his beloved Mill Reef’s win in ’71.

January 15, 2013 at 21:44 #426460Sad news, brilliant Derby winner, echo many of the comments above.
January 15, 2013 at 22:15 #426461Brilliant horse, won KIng George in style when it really meant something, under-rated.
January 15, 2013 at 22:40 #426465Fantastic horse, but owner Prince Fahd Salman’s decision to sack Richard Quinn as jockey and replace him with Alan Munro, on virtually the eve of the Derby was unforgivable.
Prince Fahd Salman is also now deceased.
January 18, 2013 at 21:03 #426781I can’t think of any other horse who would win The Dewhusrt at such long odds ( 50/1 ) and would then go on to win the three biggest flat races in the British Isles the following season.

January 19, 2013 at 11:18 #426857Generous was truly, one of British flat racing’s all-time great racehorses whose exploits in 1991 are unforgettable. His 7 length King George 6h and Queen Elizabeth Diamond stakes win in 1991 was one of the most spectacular wins in a group 1 middle distance race where he cruised like a railway train beating the likes of Star of Gdansk.Sadly he was past his prime during the Arc.Had he won the 1991 Arc he would have been hailed in the same breadth as Mill Reef or Nijinsky. To me the best British flat racehorse of the 1990’s and just a shade below Mill Reef or Dancing Brave. His memories will live in our hearts forever.
January 19, 2013 at 21:44 #426939Most underrated of all the greats in my mind. A true monster of a horse when on song, and a real looker too.
January 25, 2013 at 18:10 #427424rip generous

January 26, 2013 at 02:08 #427493RIP Generous the most Beautiful Chestnut Colt with flowing mane..will always remember seeing you running 4th in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and thinking you might just need the extra distance to win the Derby that year which you did. Happy memories so sad that you have now gone, sleep well dear friend
