A thread for the festival races aside from the feature events.
Monday
5.10 Mystical Power- an unimaginative choice to start. Hypotenus has experience but Willie’s horse looks uncomplicated and was strong and steady enough to shrug off a little bit of bumping and jostling in his bumper and get the job done.
5.40 token bet on Big Island – 2/2 at Galway and copes with soft
6.10 Sea the Polaris: I picked him purely on breeding given the ground- by Sea the Stars out of a Siyouni mare who herself won on softJuly 31, 2023 at 17:17 #1657373Good start with Mystical Power
I took 11/4 about Air Commander earlier, interesting jockey bookings for the O’Brien yard and pleased to see the odds shortening
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
July 31, 2023 at 17:20 #1657376“Good start with Mystical Power”
Thanks. Strong lump of a horse. Might as well just send him over fences now. I have him pencilled in for the Faugheen novices’ chase at Limerick next season
July 31, 2023 at 18:10 #1657390I’m not a fav backer normally, I just can’t see past Mythology.
I’ve taken the 7/4 with Bet365.1810 Galway Mythology 7/4 Bet365
July 31, 2023 at 18:14 #1657394Well done bigG, winner is a fine looking horse.
July 31, 2023 at 18:33 #1657401Thanks Green, he was tough in those conditions.
I’ve already backed my choice in the 18.40 yesterday, I took the
10.0 and 9.6 on Zinc White. I’ve stolen a few points but i won’t
mean anything if he doesn’t win. It’s a competitive looking race.July 31, 2023 at 18:57 #1657409Very token bets on Rathbranchurch and Astar in the next two, and I have My Great Mate in a double with Mystical Power so not putting anything more on the last race.
July 31, 2023 at 19:15 #1657413Final one from me tonight as need time to study Goodwood
1915 Coolcalmncollected 20/1 E/W 4 places Bet365
July 31, 2023 at 19:21 #1657414and it’s goodnight from me
July 31, 2023 at 20:32 #1657428Don’t know how the Mullins horse won running like that, I thought my money had gone when he got his head up and tail up and took off. I had a fiver on that double, so nicely set up for the week now
August 1, 2023 at 11:35 #1657570In the 7.50 Pinar Del Rio is a little interesting around 20-1. I can’t imagine being moved on by Paddy Twomey is a great compliment but PT is well known to wish to keep his yard as high quality as possible, and you won’t see him with any runners in 0-80s unless there’s an exceptional circumstance. This guy has caught the to me twice. Should appreciate the softer going on his 2yo form. Small fancy only as i know very little about the trainer.
8.20- another small small fancy, and it’s mainly because the trainer + jockey combination are good together. Mercurial. Trainer 11 runs, 3 wins 3 places in 5 yrs with 4yo+. The jockey is 15 runs, 3 wins and 5 places with all horses with Nallen in the 5 yrs. Narrowed down, 3 winners, 3 places in 10 runners at 4yo+. So they do have success. Stepping up to a mile for the 3rd time, the other 2 times were in a class to high it seems. Runs off 70 here, and a 7lb claimer, he’s well in. The trip is a concern, but i trust the trainer here.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!August 1, 2023 at 13:35 #1657606If Mystical Power had shown anything as a youngster he’d have gone to either Aidan or Joseph’s…..as it is he’s gone to Willie’s. Which tells you all you need to know…..
August 1, 2023 at 17:08 #1657682Arctic Fly is my selection in the first race tonight, I think she’s a good ew price, and I have her in an ew double with Bialystok in the Galway hurdle on Thursday too.
August 1, 2023 at 17:26 #1657683Her task was made easier by Space Tourist’s mistake, but that was an excellent ride from Sean O’Keeffe to get her settled. I can’t find a bet on the rest of the card (though interested to see how Mars Harper gets on) bar an ew on Casanova in the big race.
August 2, 2023 at 12:50 #165785340Tote.ie Never Beaten By SP (Q.R.) Maiden of €17,000.00 3-y-o plus 1m. 4f. 43yds. 21 Declared
A very Irish race.
Most of this field have won a race in the national hunt code either bumpers chases or hurdles.
There are only a few actual flat horses in here and never one to miss an opportunity Joseph O’Brien runs a group one horse up and under.
Obviously my love of all things oval puts me onto this fellow.
This race, although a maiden is also a handicap in all but name as the variance in weights comes in winner’s penalties.
Perversely therefore up and under carries just 11-2 and would be going some to lose in receipt of many pounds from most of the field.
Someone of course has to come second and third and that’s likely where the value is here.
If you want anything approaching evens with up and under you need to back him to win by a length or more, but on these terms he should be five lengths clear by the end if not more.
Second to white birch in a maiden on heavy and subsequently fifth to Augusta Rodin in the Irish derby receiving lumps of weight and rated 100 you’d have to burn the saddle and put the ashes in an urn if he didn’t deliver here.
Anyway you can get evens for him to do the deed by two lengths or more, and on these terms I’d say that was very fair……
What could go wrong??????
Up And Under to win by 2.0 lengths or more @ 6/5
Price Boost – Lengthen The Odds
17.40 GalwayAugust 2, 2023 at 15:51 #1657934Can’t find a bet away from the main event today so just an 8-1 treble of 3 favs
5.10 Up and Under as per Sam’s reasoning
7.50 High Class Hero. ( I would have backed All the Others ew as the main danger but he’s NR)
8.20 Wellhavewan. When asked about good chances for the feature hurdle on Saturday , Patrick Mullins mentioned one or two then said this horse was unfortunately unlikely to get in and I got the impression they thought he might be well handicapped.Zoffany Bay might be back to himself too so I’ll have a small ew on him in the last
August 2, 2023 at 17:51 #1657953I expect the Galway punters were delighted when a reserve at 66/1 beat the odds on favourite!
