Who was the only chaser in training rated by Timeform higher than Red Rum after both his first National win in 1973, and his third win in 1977 ?

Make a horse name anagram of “The Racing Forum” ?

Re the first question, I may have to use the weak excuse of it being before my time!

The two candidates that immediately sprung to mind were L’Escargot and The Dikler, but I think they both retired a bit earlier than 1977. At a guess I would say Captain Christy, though I’m not sure when he retired.

Was it the brilliant rum dancing Tiger Roll ?

As for the anagram what about The Racing Forum which ran in blue colours and had a rating of … well, I dare not say.

The answer, surprisingly, is Pendil. He still had a Timeform rating of 160 after Rummy’s third win. The next closest is Tingle Creek, just a point lower than Red Rum after the 77 National, 156-155. Even in the spring of ’77, aged 12, Pendil was beating the likes of Gold Cup favourite Fort Devon.
