Always thought this was accepted to be 5yo. Why are the 5yo’s in receipt of 2lb from the 6yo’s and above, for the Grade 1 Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown tomorrow?
It does seem odd, but the Irish use their own weight for age scale, which is quite different to the one we employ in the UK.
On their scale, for hurdles races over 2m 4f, 5-y-olds receive 3lbs from older horses in January, 2lbs in February and 1lb in March. Add another 1lb to those figures for 3m races, which extends to 1lb in April.
Here, the allowance for 2m 4f hurdles disappears for 4-y-olds in October.
