Whereas the Racing Post gives the handicap marks horses run off in Ireland, it doesn’t for French handicaps and I am wondering if any member knows a source for these.
More specifically, I would very much like to know what handicap mark today’s Ripon winner, Borderforce, won off at Longchamp on 8 April this year.
Thanks in advance for any guidance that can be offered.
August 27, 2018 at 21:07 #1364760On 8 April 2018 Borderforce won at Longchamp off a French official rating of 44, which is in kilograms. Multiplying 44 by the usual kilograms to English pounds conversion of 2.205, gives 97.02. So his French rating was equal to the rating the BHA Official Handicapper alloted him in his first two races in the UK, where he was poor. The drop of 5 pounds in his last race would have been good info for anyone who backed him at 22/1 and watch him scoot home for a not-a-surprise win.
In general, go to www2.france-galop.com/FGWeb
On the home page click on “Public Access”
On the next page, hover the cursor over “Horses and Key Players” to reveal a drop-down menu, click on Race Record
On the next page, enter the name of your horse in the search box, which will reveal a drop-down list of horses, click on the one you want
The next page has the info about the horse, click the “Performance” tab or just scoll down till you get to “Performances”
Each of the horse’s races is listed, the handicap mark is the number inside a green oval. If there is a column heading it will be “Valeurs”August 28, 2018 at 08:57 #1364813Marginal Value
Thank you for such a detailed and helpful reply.
August 28, 2018 at 09:25 #1364818Another way to convert French handicap ratings is to divide by 0.453 grams.
44/0.453 = 97.13
On the day Borderforce ran to a RPR of 95, using my RPR conversion chart this converts to a OR of 87.

Note: The conversion chart ratios were calculated from 33,000 races using SPSS, this was because The BHA WFA table is totally flawed, for example the Racing Post WFA table says a 2yo in March should receive a WFA of 26lbs, and the BHA says 47lbs.
