    Montestrel 16/1 NRNB

Beat Quel Destin well on debut back in October and then was down the field when sent off Fav again against QD, but that was too bad to be true and the lay-off since would indicate something was amiss.
Runs today at Taunton for fitness, wee boost and vitally a third start, meaning he’ll get a mark. Because of the second run hopefully gets a mark in the mid 130s region and can go here with a good chance. Williams family won the race in 2017 with Flying Tiger.

Wonder whether Montestrel could be excused for today’s dire effort. Andrew Mount mentioned on William Hill Radio that it was likely he had his flu jab quite recently. Don’t touch the handicaps until the day really but I’ve backed Montestrel for the Triumph (doubt he’d rock up now, particularly as Sir Erec has become ridiculously over-hyped). Had pennies on Maze Runner for this, but he hasn’t progressed as I’d hoped.

Above all, I’m hoping my main Triumph bet – Gardens of Babylon doesn’t go here. I actually think he’d have more chance of winning the Grade 1 then coming up against Band Of Outlaws, Montestrel and co.

Montestrel was terrible today. They’d have wanted to see more than that i’d have thought.
I cashed out, if he turns up on the day i would maybe go back in at much bigger prices.

Gardens Of Babylon would be too high in the handicap for this i’d have thought, will take on SE in the Triumph. They’ve Fine Brunello and Konitho for this.

I had a look through the market for this last night and came down on Surin being big at 14s.
Good form with Gardens Of Babylon and will have around 135-6 in this which looks more than fair to me and a strong pace looks perfect for her.

I’d be surprised to see them run a mare in this race. She’d get a 7lb allowance in the Triumph but won’t here.

Even with the 7lbs it is likely to take a higher rating to win the Triumph than the FW. Just by having a quick look at the past winners!

Agreed, she’d have no chance in a Triumph but she’d have near top weight in a Fred Winter and it’s asking a lot of a 4yo mare to run off levels, let alone giving away weight to her male counterparts.

There’s a reason why you don’t get many mares running in this race.

She’d be better off in the mare’s novice in receipt of 7lb or if anybody thinks she’d be good enough to win a Fred Winter off say 136 then even the Supreme where she’d get both the weight and sex allowance putting her adjusted rating roughly on a par with the 150 runners.

That did come across my mind Wilson and i agree to an extent, but you could run 140 in the FW and win and not the supreme. Gordon also ran Missy Tata in the race in 2016.

Punted NRNB anyway, so if she goes elsewhere it’s all good.
