From ATR.
Frankie Dettori has been appointed as the new retained rider for leading owner Sheikh Joaan Al Thani.
Al Thani is one of the rising stars of the owning and breeding ranks with the likes of St James’s Palace Stakes runner-up Toronado, Group One winner Olympic Glory and French 2,000 Guineas hero Style Vendome among his horses.
He also recently purchased Naas Listed winner Sandiva, who Dettori partnered when second in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Dettori, whose long and successful partnership with Godolphin came to end last autumn, is delighted to have his new position confirmed.
He said: “I’m thrilled to have taken a job for an outstanding new owner and I’m looking forward to the association.”
Al Thani, who also has the Marco Botti-trained Planteur in his British-based team, owns the Haras de Bouquetot stud farm in Normandy[/color:oukmr11f]
Does this mean he will get the ride on Toronado?…

Don’t worry Nath, looks like Hughesie’s keeping Toronado for the Sussex and all being well will continue to ride him from there

From the RP website…………
Sheikh Joaan’s assistant Sian Jones said: "At the moment Toronado will stay with Richard Hughes in the Sussex Stakes and if the result goes well he will then continue to be ridden by Richard."

You gotta love that comment, so in other words "No pressure Richard, just go out and ride your race but you do realise that if you lose, you’ve lost the ride ?…"
I wish I’d taken some of those fancy prices about Dettori riding a G1 winner in 2013.

July 1, 2013 at 12:27 #444559Good luck to Frankie and great to see this new money coming into the sport but I really don’t think Richard Hughes has got anything to worry about…….he is at least the equal of Frankie and despite getting it wrong as all jockeys do at times he is super confrident in his undoubted ability and you can take his word about horses as gospel…….total horseman who is well worth the occaisional misfired plan.
July 1, 2013 at 12:47 #444565A puzzler. Frankie has played a blinder here.
July 1, 2013 at 13:07 #444572Where does Spencer come in or is this man a different Al Thani?

Now then….the permanently wet behind the ears Spencer WOULD have something to worry about if this Frankie/Al Thani tie -up is connected in anyway to his.
July 1, 2013 at 13:19 #444575It has seemed strange seeing Frankie coming into the Parade Ring in an array of silks when we have been so used to seeing him in the Godolphin Blue and he seems to have been in the wilderness this season so far so landing this plum job is, for him, a great confidence boost.
Would have preferred to have seen the job go to one of the younger jockeys such as Adam Kirby or Neil Callan but the building of the Sheik Al Thani horseracing empire has come at the right time for the luckless Mr Dettori.
Amazing that people who go racing just for the occasional day out still follow him blindly. At Newmarket on Saturday Frankie had 4 rides mostly with outside chances, but people were putting them into Yankees and Lucky 15’s and literally throwing money into the bookies satchels. One little girl sitting round the paddock had her camera poised and all she wanted was a shot of Frankie the horses were of no interest to her. I really hope he makes a success of his new job and doesn’t let that little girl down or any of his loyal supporters.

The professional gamblers on this forum would have you believe that the part a jockey plays has no barring in their thinking when dissecting a horses chance in an individual race they forget that Denman threw McCoy into orbit because both their styles of running/jockeying clashed. Jockeys like horses have different attributes which can affect the percentage of chance. Back to Toronado in one corner we have Richard champion jockey Hughes 100+ winners this season already and in the other we have Frankie the snake Dettori with 0 winners this season and has more chance winning next years big brother then a race this season……

Just because I discount them (mostly) doesn’t mean I have never done any due diligence.

$jockey = ‘Ryan Moore’;I can alter any and all these parameters to my choosing and the result gives me the median beaten distance at said parameters by said jockey.
Ryan Moore was 2.24L, Micky Fenton was 3.50L. So Ryan mostly was about 3lb better than Muscles. (Richard Hughes was 2.25L and Dettori 2.50L).
By and large these differences are not huge deal breakers for me. I’m aware others disagree but that’s what it’s all about.July 3, 2013 at 10:07 #444707Before the race = jockey does not matter
after the race = jockey cocked up

You’ve edited your post, I’ve just spent five minutes(yes that’s all) to line a little quote up from one of our pro’s.

July 3, 2013 at 15:24 #444730There are a few things a jockey should do. One; always strive to be in a positin from which he can win the race. Two; ask the horse for one effort (to win).Three; focus on the least complicated route to the winning post. Four; avoid getting oneself in a traffic jam.(one and four are related). Those are the jockey’s responsibility. After that it is up to the horse.
