It seems clear to me that Ryan Moore is a way better jockey as things stand today. It is hardly surprising that the younger, hungrier Jockey should be superior to the elder statesman but I wondered what readers would say if they were to imagine both jockeys at their peak and had to nominate the better jockey?
Anyone wondering if Frankie has lost some of his greatness should check out, if possible, the 8.35 at Newbury on Tuesday past. Frankie’s mount Asyad was well clear in the closing stages but was worn down by a much stronger looking Ryan Moore on the favourite. It was like watching Red Rum catching Crisp or Usain Bolt giving Alan Wells a 40 metre start and catching him in the 100th metre.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
June 28, 2014 at 20:39 #484253Tough, but I think Ryan Moore is the best all-round flat jockey I have ever seen. I am convinced that he has won more races on horses just by being the jockey than Dettori has, percentage wise that is. And he is just so hard to get the better of in a finish. I must admit as to being a bit annoyed with Dettori’s ride on Hillstar in the Hardwicke. The horse wouldn’t have won anyway, and I’m not miffed from a betting perspective as I thought he was a great each-way bet, but I think that ride showed that the Italian’s a bit tactically inept.
July 8, 2014 at 11:22 #484989Thanks Charles, looks like nobody else is interested.
Why do I bother?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 8, 2014 at 11:58 #484990Dettori is so weak in a finish nowadays. With Treve’s fitness and Cirrus Des Aigles’ will to win, that result may have been hard to reverse even with a stronger jockey, but Dettori was visibly struggling to match his rival rider in the closing stages.
He is very lucky to have a lucrative retainer to build up those retirement funds.
July 8, 2014 at 14:21 #485007Steve , its a funny one , I remember a young Frankie out riding an veteran Pat Eddery , in a long protracted duel that went on for 2 furlongs , both got a ban for the whip …even then !!!
Now its Frankies turn , its that simple
Nobody ever out rode Lester , nobody could , Ryan would be hard pressed to , probably not , but he’s the best of this generation by some way for animal strength and overall awareness, he sometimes gets caught out by track bias though , so he needs to add this to his locker
Hughes is the best at finesse ,
I say lets enjoy them all , be warned though , this Kid Murphy ,,could challenge Ryan in the near future , but we will see …he is showing signs of being different class
July 9, 2014 at 16:12 #485068Maybe in his pomp Dettori was possibly Moore’s equal but now it is like Premiership V Division 1.
I metioned Dettori and his Hillsatr ride already.Very poor
It just seems sometimes he cannot be bothered and he never seems to give a horse a hard ride where as Moore seems hungry to win.
I think if Dettori had not got this latest retainer I think he would have packed it in.July 9, 2014 at 19:27 #485071Didn’t they ask Lester a few years back which jockey he would use if he had a choice of all of them and he said Dettori [although I assume this was before Ryan Moore was as good as he is now]. Mind you, at least Frankie is only grumpy some of the time and, when he’s on song is good for racing, with even non racing friends of mine knowing about him. You’d never use Ryan Moore to make racing more popular.
July 9, 2014 at 21:32 #485078I think we live in an interesting era – Richard Hughes and Ryan Moore impress Me loads, Joseph O’Brien reminds Me more of Lester Piggott every day and I think Frankie Dettori retains a lot of ability.
If I think there is an over rated high profile jockey, I would suggest William Buick – sorry William, don’t take it personally, how many winners have I ridden? Lol

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 9, 2014 at 22:02 #485086The best thing William Buick has going for him is his connection to the Gosden stable. He is a good enough jockey but I don’t think he has much tactical nous and he would have been lucky to have caught Mukhadram on a Harley Davidson, never mind The Fugue, from the hold up position he adopted in The Eclipse.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 9, 2014 at 22:21 #485089And here’s Buick closing fast, but he’s left it too late.

That looks like Ryan Moore to my old eyes. Mind you, I’ve not much of a clue what Buick looks like having paid very little attention to him.
July 9, 2014 at 22:37 #485092Here’s the pic, without shading and twisting. Is Buick though.

July 10, 2014 at 06:19 #485110Why pick on Frankie? You could put any other jockey up against Moore and they wouldn’t come out on top.
Frankie has been at the top of the tree for a long time and I would still have him in the top 3 riding today. You wouldn’t expect him to be at his peak in his mid forties and he has a lot less rides these days.
July 10, 2014 at 15:41 #485151I have no doubt had Moore been on Hillstar today it would have won, another weak finish from Dettori
July 10, 2014 at 15:51 #485152Really Yeats?
I’d have Hanagan, Moore, Hughes, O. Murphy, De Sousa, Soumillion, Atzeni, Fanning, Harley, Tylicki, Buick, Doyle, Lee, Winston, Sanders, Queally, Bentley, Guyon and even Fallon above Dettori right now.

Good.
Does it matter, we’ll all have different opinions but if Frankie isn’t as good as all those jockeys there’s not much he can do about it is there?
Like all professions the quality of jockeys will vary.
