When I was looking up the history of Vorvados (see Cammidge Trophy thread in Big Race forum), I knew that I’d viewed his 1984 Doncaster win on TV while I was racing at Newbury watching their last NH meeting of the season.

When I looked at the card for that Newbury meeting, I was amazed to see that I’d seen four future stars in consecutive races – and I don’t think any of them registered at the time!

First up was future Stayers Hurdle winner, Rose Ravine, winning the mares final under top weight. Then the least likely one, Grand National winner Seagram running in a 2M juvenile handicap hurdle. The 3M handicap chase field included Broadheath, who subsequently won a Hennessy and the 2M 4F novice chase was won by future Gold Cup hero Charter Party.

I’ve probably been at plenty of meetings that included one or two stars to be, but four in the first four races on the card might be unique.

Went to a midweek meeting at Haydock in Nov 1993 when they used to have decent races like the Edward Hanmer, Tommy Whittle & Tim Molony before they shunted them all onto a Saturday and with proper fences.
In the novice chase One Man hammered Monsieur Le Cure, who went on to run up a sequence himself in the novice chases including the Pendil, Sun Alliance and Mildmay.
In the Edward Hanmer itself Gold Cup winner Jodami beat Cab On Target, who was odds on to beat Jodami. A Gold Cup winner running for lass than 10 grand although he had fallen in the Charlie Hall a couple of weeks before.
4 stars in 2 jumps races at a midweek meeting at Haydock, can’t see that happening again.

First time i went racing as a kid with my Dad Sandown Dec 83, Broadheath ran , i remember he was up against horse called Earthstopper who was good .
West Tip ran in novice chase on same card .
Backed Broadheath when he won Hennessy , jocks cap came off, I remember it like yesterday , think my Dad put 50 ew on it for me .
As for Seagram , he was one of many David Barons brought from NZ unraced .
Ive had look at NZ Studbook , he was by Bakak (GB) , no idea ofcsires race record .
The year after his dam went to Playschools sire Valuta ( GB) again no idea his record . That mating produced filly called Valoir . Valoir in 1987 produced Deecee Seven who in 96 ran 3rd in NZ Grand National and won it in 97 and 98 . In those days NZ jump racing was decent , Lord Gyllene could only win 2 of 23 around that time in NZ and hosed up in Aintree National

Lord Gyllene won the only Grand National I attended. It was at 5pm on Monday, after the Saturday card was abandoned due to a bomb warning.

It was quite strange attending a meeting with only one race. I expect I still have the racecard somewhere.

I remember getting to the course about 2pm but having to queue for about two hours to get through all the security that had been hastily arranged.

Looking at Lord Gyllenes NZ form I’d guess his form at Ellerslie was what attracted the purchase , he was very good there in 5 runs but average at some other tracks . The old jump track had a huge hill up and down round the back , fences uphill and down . Jumps gone now and hill now houses .
Won’t ever see a good jumper out of NZ in UK no more , jumping on last legs in NZ , very average now .

I was just looking at the Timeform annual for 1983/84, the year when apracing went to Newbury, and the comments on the four stars he mentions are varied.

Rose Ravine is described as not having to make much more progress to trouble the established staying hurdlers, which she did, while Charter Party “should improve further over fences”, which he most certainly did.

On the other hand, Seagram got a tepid “may stay beyond 2 miles” – if only they knew – and Broadheath “stays 25F but not 3 1/4 miles”. He also had an x to indicate jumping issues. Hmmmm.
