I’m sending Drone’s message to Pseuds’ Corner in Private Eye!
At last
Having subscribed to that estimable mag for over thirty years it would be an honour to appear on its hallowed pages
I like words, not necessarily the right words nor necessarily in the right order
I liken them to a borzoi jumping in and out of a watering can
I got a head full of ideas that are drivin’ me insane

October 13, 2012 at 09:03 #416481I think I should just point out that if one takes into account my previous incarnation, with the exception of Robert99, I have been on this forum considerably longer than any of you.
Suffice to say, I feel the forum peaked in 2003 so anybody saying that it peaked after then is talking out of their bum.
Forums are constantly changing their line ups over time. Mostly because many people who like to express their opinions are, by default, egotistical. There were massive egos around in 2002 as much as there are in 2012. This isn’t a bad thing as ego is, for better or for worse, the unstoppable driving force behind humanity. It just explains why when I was reincarnated last year, I didn’t recognise the majority of you people.
f.a.o Cormack or Matron, if you’re concerned then I can assure you that I wasn’t banned in the past. PM me for my old account name and password if you feel the need to lock it but it’s dormant as it is and I see no reason to revive it given that most people that recognise it aren’t here now
October 13, 2012 at 09:29 #416488It is sad that the people Cav has mentioned have moved on.

If that isn’t an adequate example of a super-inflated ego, then I don’t know what is!

I was being deliberately facetiousness in order to get the point across
The forum isn’t really any better or worse than it was ten years ago. It simply has a very different cast. As TAPK alluded to, in five years time, there will no doubt be intermittent newcomers bemoaning the status quo and talking about 2012 like it was a golden era for the forum.
Typically speaking, everybody is going to think that a particular forum was great during the time they first joined because the content at that moment was the reason they stuck around. Change is inevitable in every area of life and forums are no exception. It would simply appear that some people are uncomfortable with change.

Forgive me if I don’t take the bait.

October 14, 2012 at 17:49 #416731I opened this thread expecting to read some good arguments for and against flat and jump racing instead I’m reading things like "Forum Cliques"…..some people have a vivid imagination or an inferiority complex if they think there’s such a thing on here.
Utter nonsense and nothing to do with Flat V Jumps.
As far as that goes I’m very much a jumps guy but the most awesome sight I’ve ever seen was Secretariat winning the Belmont when taking the Triple Crown. He did to Sham that day what Frankel did to the likes of Excelebration with one difference.
One moment he was having a bit of a race with Sham who was himself a top class animal, then he took off like a bat out of hell but that wasn’t the end of it he just kept going further and further away winning by an amazing 31 lengths. Frankel is awesome, brilliant fantastic you name it but Secretariat for me is the greatest racehorse of all time bar none.
As far as everyday racing is concerned flat racing is so bad sometimes I just turn it off. These maiden with 20 runners are a punter graveyard and those handicaps with 30 runners most of whom are crossing paths for the first time are straight from the pits of hell. Punters have no chance and to me that does not represent fun.
If I had a chance to go and see Frankel or Sprinter Sacre who will hopefully be as good over jumps as Frankel is on the flat I wouldn’t hesitate for one moment to head straight to the jumps meeting. Frankel will be gone forever in a weeks time hopefully Sprinter Sacre will be around for many more years.
It’s not just the spectacle of watching a horse jump it’s the relationship you build up with horses like Kauto Star who has been with us for what? 8 years or so. Horses like him, Denman,Hurricane Fly, Istabraq, Rummy, Desert Orchid, Arkle himself and hopefully Sprinter Sacre stay around for years and become long lasting heroes whereas on the flat there’s a new Sea the Stars every second year and they are quickly forgotten because their reigns at the top are way too short due to the financial pressure to have them tucked a way in a breeding shed as quickly as possible.
For me the greatest meeting in the world is the Cheltenham Festival and nothing even comes close to the buzz and excitement it produces.
Jumps by a mile for me,
October 14, 2012 at 18:15 #416733Good post HGM – up until the last 15 years my answer to the old question was "Both". BUT –
The obsession with 4 (should still be 3) days in March has gone too far in the jumping game. Horses using Grade 1’s as preps, I’m sick of hearing this or that animals "day will come in March".
Flat for me.

Me too, but I’m so glad of the Betlarge & Drone exchange. Wonderful stuff Gentlemen. However you’ve made me late for work
