“I hope someone representing the Jockey Club is reading this Thread and would come back with some answers..mainly WHY?”
The colours of the fireworks were red, white and blue so it must have been part of the jubilee celebrations. so, along with the complaints if they have been seen or heard should result in this not happening again. Unless we get a new king or boris resigns in which case I suggest they shoot all those jockeys wearing the queens silks out of a cannon instead, roughly around 2 hours before the horses enter the course.

June 8, 2022 at 09:32 #1601210Well said Ian. While the fireworks were clearly a stupid choice, they were also clearly well-intentioned. I suspect some “marketing” or “events” type person suggested them who did not have any knowledge of horses. Common sense should have still dictated it was a bad idea, but nobody at any level seems to have stepped in to stop the plan. It’s those at the top who I think should be held most accountable.
That said, I am no fan of internet lynch mobs, and do not think much would be gained by anyone losing their job over this.
June 8, 2022 at 10:16 #1601217I would have thought that with the modern terrorism problems that any unadvertised fireworks display is not a good idea.

The response from both the Jockey Club & Racing TV to theirs was totally inadequate and of course from unnamed spokespeople.
The idiots responsible for the fireworks should be fired. Why wasn’t it publicised it was going to happen prior to the meeting as well? The idiot at Racing TV responsible for going split screen with The Derby and a minor race at Listowel should also face the bullet. Frankly I don’t know what Racing TV/UK are doing covering Irish racing. The company was supposedly set up for the benefit of British racing. It can only be greed.
How could the starter start the first race with William Buick half off the horse and injured? He could have been seriously injured if he’d been hung up in the saddle. If jockeys or trainers do something wrong they are penalised, the same doesn’t seem to apply with officials.
June 8, 2022 at 11:29 #1601221Regarding the Blue Trail/Will Buick incident that Yeats just highlighted I have to totally agree with him that Will could have been seriously injured but for his own common sense…
This is what I rote on my Meydan Thread the following day…‘I was really surprised that none of the stallhandlers alerted the starter that Will Buick was in trouble. They are so used to attending horses that have reared up and gone e but I don’t think this has ever occurred where a jockey has been almost knocked cold by a neighbouring horse and it wouldn’t have been immediately obvious to the starter who thought they were set to go. There could have been a nasty incident if Will Buick still had his feet in the stirrups.’

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 8, 2022 at 11:35 #1601222I suspect Racing TV is contractually obliged to show every race live, Yeats. Or at least has contractual heavy compensation to pay if not showing it. If so is it not the Listowel starter at fault?
There may have been a lot of crowd noise at the time of the William Buick incident. It seemed to happen very fast.
Value Is EverythingJune 8, 2022 at 11:54 #1601226The Buck stops with the Starter, not the Stalls handlers, for me on this one.

I don’t whether the Listowel starter knew anything, his race was more or less off on time. It was the Derby that was off 8 minutes late. It does happen that races are off late at times for many reasons. I don’t see how Listowel or anyone benefitted from their race being shown live split screen with the Derby. Surely it would have been more sensible to have shown the Listowel race full screen immediately after the Derby. If Racing TV are contractually obliged that’s their fault for signing it and their greed.
Crowd noise is no excuse, if there is excessive noise to start the race safely, a system should be in place to deal with it. Robbie Supple shouldn’t start the race willy nilly.
June 8, 2022 at 12:20 #1601230No split screen on ITV, I know a lot of preference is for the other station but easy enough to switch channel if wanting to avoid the split screen for one race

June 8, 2022 at 12:33 #1601232Derby was late off because of animal rights activists laying down on the track. So lateness of the Epsom race was no fault of Epsom.
When a big race is late off I seem to remember other smaller British races held back – even if it’s for a big Irish race. It just doesn’t seem reciprocated the other way around. Should be easy enough for the Listowel starter to be informed.
Value Is EverythingJune 8, 2022 at 12:36 #1601233Totally agree Nathan.
RTV are there to cover all races at their tracks while ITV give uninterrupted coverage of the big meetings.
One flick of a switch and the split screen isn’t an issue.
June 8, 2022 at 12:38 #1601234Am sure a system is in place to stop things like the Buick incident – with other members of the starter’s team looking out for problems – but mistakes can happen.
Value Is EverythingJune 8, 2022 at 12:43 #1601235Even the betting shops should have enough screens to put one of them on ITV coverage on for the main race. Not sure what the contract issue might be regarding that.

June 8, 2022 at 12:54 #1601237The split screen was mainly the fault of the Listowel starter and officials. They must have known the Derby start was imminent.
I also blame RTV. I am sure they do have a contractual obligation to show all their races live but common sense should have prevailed. If they had stayed on full screen for the Derby, would the Irish racing authorities really have sued? They would look ridiculous.
There is also the issue of race planning. Was it sensible to schedule a jumps race just before the Derby and another race just seven minutes later?
I did switch over to ITV but that is not the point. Viewers pay a subscription to RTV and are entitled to better service. It is absurd that arguably the channel’s most important race should be shown on a split screen with an Irish maiden race.
I remember Noel Meade once getting very upset because a big race in Ireland had to be shown on a split screen. I must have missed it if he had anything to say about last weekend.
As for the Buick incident, it was 100% the starter’s fault. The noise is no excuse. It was obvious some jockeys were not ready or facing the right way. I am just glad Buick was OK.
From a selfish point of view, I backed Grenoble (I am not after timing, I napped him in both tipping competitions). He was arguably denied victory by the loose horse – and at 25/1 that hurts! At least I was on each way, albeit with a nice 20p Rule 4.

Spot on Cork All Star.
There is far too much racing so races will clash, it is up to Racing TV to deal with it sensibly. Whether that be another channel or the red button they should use some of the money they waste on the countless presenters and pundits.
I still don’t know why or how anyone benefits from split screens, especially if viewers take the advice of one or two on here and switch to ITV.June 8, 2022 at 13:40 #1601240As for the Buick incident, it was 100% the starter’s fault.
I agree, but mistakes happen.
Value Is EverythingJune 8, 2022 at 13:56 #1601242Ginger, agree mistakes happen. Everyone makes them. But this was a very poor mistake that could have had serious consequences.
It also affected the race and the betting. A 20p Rule 4 is a big deduction.
I do not believe the starter should be sacked. However, I agree with Jane Mangan when she said on “Luck on Sunday” that it is not fair when the starter will almost certainly have no action taken against him but trainers and jockeys receive punishments for far more minor misdemeanors.
