Only noticed it when I re watched it on catchup. Still can’t believe they did something so stupid. And then there was the incident with William Buick in the stalls.
June 4, 2022 at 23:34 #1600659Absolute madness I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and hearing

June 5, 2022 at 06:12 #1600686Those bloody bugles are bad enough – FIREWORKS????? – why?
There has been a total ignorance of horses shown here. Surely someone with a little bit of nous saw the plan for fireworks and put a big red line through it. I find it unbelievable.
Let’s see if there is more accountability shown by the racing authorities than our “government” has exhibited.
June 5, 2022 at 07:01 #1600688Racing used to be run by old establishment fuddy duddys but now Marketing types rule.

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJune 5, 2022 at 07:44 #1600692Echo the sentiments above. Couldn’t believe what I was seeing
June 5, 2022 at 08:44 #1600701It takes a long time to get to start for The Derby so I’m guessing Epsom were worried that the sockless thickies that they want to attract these days might get bored.
June 5, 2022 at 09:28 #1600705I assume this ridiculous idea was part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations and will not be repeated last year. I doubt the Queen would have been amused if she had been there.
June 5, 2022 at 10:23 #1600726Absolutely ridiculous even the camera crew seemed totally surprised and had to pan towards it
June 5, 2022 at 10:32 #1600730It’s all part of the sad fact that the BHA no longer has confidence in its actual core product.
A Day At The Races uses to be: pay your admission, see the horses in the paddock if you like, set aside an amount to bet on each race if you want, and watch the races and cheer home your horse if you’ve had a bet as if you owned it for the duration of the race.
Now it’s about, boozing, giving it large, themed race days, live music after racing, the actual racing is pushed into the background.
Racing should not be marketed by mere marketeers, but by true lovers of racing with a true understanding of what it had to offer who are turning their hand to marketing.
It’s p*ss-poor going racing nowadays mostly, especially on a Saturday, which is why so many of us confine ourselves to the occasional quieter, more civilised, midweek afternoon fixture.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 5, 2022 at 12:03 #1600748Just seen this Thread before I watch my taped recording of the day with Fast Forward button in hand.
All I can say is what load of out of touch morons thought that letting off fireworks with racehorses worth millions of pounds close by would be a good idea?As Moe said and I was thinking it could well have contributed to how fractious the horse stalled next to Blue Trail in the first race was and to him throwing his head about and striking Will Buick in the face. Another mistake that was not addressed at the time and many horses denied a run because of the riderless horse.
Back to the fireworks before racing…Someone needs to be brought to account for this fiasco resulting in it being knocked on the head fast.
Also as Colin mentioned earlier do we really need bugles to strike up as horses are just about to make their way to the one and a half mile start.
On Oaks day I noticed Frankie had a keen hold on Emily Upjohn as the band struck up she behaved well in the circumstances but there were noticeably more red hoods being worn.My wish like most on here would be to give a little more respect to the beautifully bred but fragile horses whose day this is. Take a step back in time and bring back the tradition that once was Derby Day. It’s sad to think that some of those that attended yesterday would not even have bothered to go and look at the horses just stayed around the bars clutching a handful of Tote betting slips and a bottomless pint of beer.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 5, 2022 at 12:13 #1600751“My wish like most on here would be to give a little more respect to the beautifully bred but fragile horses whose day this is. Got it in a nutshell.
June 5, 2022 at 13:29 #1600761I missed this on the live broadcast but I am appalled that ANYONE thought it would be a good idea. I can only think they must not know how horses tend to react to unexpected loud noises and, therefore, must not know horses at all. But somebody should have.
June 5, 2022 at 13:53 #1600764Myself and Mrsraymo could not believe the fireworks !! At first we thought it was some sort of protest and to be honest our disbelief only grew when we found out it was organised.
The first thing I said was what about the horses being unsaddled and saddled for the later races. they would have been closer to the inane and insane explosions and someone has to take responsibility for this idea and action and surely has to be dismissed immediately!!
June 5, 2022 at 19:01 #1600811The Jockey Club quoted in the Racing Post as saying: “The pre-race show was thoroughly tested in advance and both timed and placed with our participants in mind.”
I think that makes it worse. I was hoping they’d say the fireworks were supposed to go off half an hour after the last race, once all the horses were safely away, as a way of wrapping up the day… and someone misunderstood the instructions.
But no, they planned this, they tested it… and nobody involved piped up to wonder if this was appropriate with 17 highly-strung three-year-olds a few furlongs away, not to mention those in the stables?
Unbelievable.June 5, 2022 at 19:36 #1600817I don’t think there can be many threads on here where there is such unanimous agreement. The response from the Jockey Club is as stupid as it is unsurprising.
Even if you aren’t an equine expert, and it appears I had best not hold anyone at the Jockey Club to such a high bar as that, then the knowledge of how domestic pets are affected by fireworks should still have been sufficient to indicate this was a totally idiotic idea.
June 5, 2022 at 19:57 #1600819Just watched the Talking Points from this week’s Luck on Sunday, presented by Rishi Persad rather than Luck. The fireworks was one of the issues up for discussion.
Both Sam Turner and Jane Mangan were very critical of the situation. As Turner said, was there anyone at Epsom yesterday who really thought “The one thing that would make this day better would be some fireworks.”
Epsom Racecourse and the BHA should just admit they made a stupid mistake and apologise.
June 5, 2022 at 20:18 #1600821Nobody makes mistakes these days!
