Was not paying full attention to the TV at the time, but was that a fireworks display I saw at Epsom just before the Derby?!
Pure insanity if so. Surely everyone knows how much animals can get spooked by fireworks, let alone highly charged racehorses.
June 4, 2022 at 16:57 #1600573Just what 17 3yo colts want just before The Derby – as if the Epsom Downs cauldron wasn’t enough of a test of temperament already.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 4, 2022 at 16:58 #1600574Don’t worry, Marlingford. They’ll learn from this next year and set off the pyrotechnics while the horses are in the saddling boxes.
June 4, 2022 at 17:00 #1600577Maybe each horse could have a rocket attached next year, which the jockey can light at a strategically important moment?
June 4, 2022 at 17:04 #1600580I’m sure a few of the jockeys will need a rocket up the a***.
June 4, 2022 at 17:05 #1600581Extraordinary to think that anyone connected to Epsom racecourse thought that was a good idea.
Probably an initiative from the Racing for Change types who know nothing about racing or horses and believe the crowd has to be amused all the time because the racing is just not interesting and exciting enough.
June 4, 2022 at 17:08 #1600583It’s like yesterday, when they had some 90s club anthems booming out across the Downs all day. What idiot comes up with these ideas? 🤷♂️
June 4, 2022 at 17:12 #1600585I’d have preferred 70 gun shots up into the air
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
June 4, 2022 at 17:43 #1600600Utter madness. Somebody needs sacking over this. Aside from the impact on the Derby runners, smoke will probably have ruined many people’s enjoyment of the event. God knows what was going on with the horses in the stables being washed down & prepared for going home who would have been even closer. Clearly it’s not “all about the horse” at all. Nahanni was mentioned as being particularly upset by this so ran well to finish 7th. Not that he’d have won but might have cost him the chance of finishing in the prize money places.
June 4, 2022 at 17:53 #1600602No doubt there will be an “investigation” and “lessons will be learned” as the usual way now when somebody buggers up royally.
Could not believe what i was seeing. Heads need to roll somewhere that’s for sure.
June 4, 2022 at 17:54 #1600603I only turned it on for the actual race so didn’t see it. Silent fireworks do exist, did they at least use those? It would have been marginally less idiotic.
June 4, 2022 at 18:03 #1600605“Silent fireworks do exist, did they at least use those?”
No, they used nice noisy ones instead. Because everyone knows how much flight animals love loud noises…
June 4, 2022 at 18:10 #1600607There are no such things as silent fireworks.
June 4, 2022 at 19:08 #1600622Some horses lost their chance before the race had even started through no fault of their own.
This Derby Probably breaks the record for most runners in the form book with “sweating” against their name. 8 of the 17 runners “sweating” in Racing Post review.
I backed the winner Desert Crown so am not speaking out of pocket and even laid the majority of my bet on Stone Age back after seeing how bad he was just prior to going into the stalls. Pity any punter unable to take evasive action.
Some horses performances are unaffected by sweating up, others are badly affected.
The person responsible needs a firework up his / her arse!
Value Is EverythingJune 4, 2022 at 21:15 #1600641Truly unbelievable how anybody could have thought that was a good idea.
June 4, 2022 at 22:25 #1600645Maybe it was timed for after the race
But they started so late it happened before
Was only 45 mins between races after all
June 4, 2022 at 22:34 #1600646Cretinous. Can’t imagine for whose benefit or enjoyment this was thought to be.
