Absolute disgrace. I don’t normally criticise jockeys but all of those in behind and particularly Conor O Farrell deserve a significant ban.
March 20, 2016 at 20:25 #1239146The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, DRIFTASHORE (IRE), ridden by Miss B. Hampson, and trained by Sally Randell, compared with its previous run at Southwell on 28 February 2016, where the gelding finished seventh, beaten 45 lengths, over three miles on good to soft ground. They noted the trainer’s explanation that DRIFTASHORE (IRE) was better suited by today’s ground, which in her opinion was tacky, and by this galloping track. They ordered the gelding to be routine tested.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of BATAVIR (IRE), ridden by Conor O’Farrell, and trained by David Pipe, which raced in third place, but well behind the eventual winner, before being asked for an effort turning into the straight, making ground to finish second, beaten 11 lengths. They interviewed the rider, who stated that his instructions were to sit handy in third or fourth but not to ask for an effort too soon as the trainer wanted the gelding to finish its race. He added that he felt the eventual winner had gone off too quickly and would come back to the rest of the field which, in his opinion, were racing at an even gallop. He further added that he felt that if he had made his effort earlier he would not have got home. Having heard his evidence the Stewards noted his explanation.
The Veterinary Officer reported that CRAZY JACK (IRE), which was pulled up, trained by Kim Bailey, had bled from the nose.
March 21, 2016 at 09:55 #1239196I am glad that the stewards are not comparing the times of Driftashore, especially as the Racing Post had the incorrect time for the race, I know I am being picky, it was only 29.10s out.
I have always wondered who is in charge of the Data at the Post, they couldn’t teach me sh*t about nothing…
Mike.
