It was quite a day. On the scaffolding stands in the cabbage patch a bloke in front of me was yelling his head off for Desert Orchid to win and after he had crossed the line turned round and said " I must be mad, I’ve had £20 on Yahoo and here I am shouting for him to get beat "
I guess some horses get people like that but I know who I’d have been shouting for with £800 riding on it, and it wouldn’t have been a grey !
As you pointed out in conditions that wouldn’t have suited it was a brave effort although I have to say it might have been in vain if Ten plus had not fallen
December 7, 2007 at 11:22 #129266The great memory for me of Azertyuiop’s Champion Chase is Ruby thinking he’s got the race sewn up and having a look between his legs to see where the rest are, and the one-time 1000/1 shot is his only rival and seeming to be travelling just as well.
Agree that Moscow Flyer’s second Tingle Creek is the best race ever, whilst Edredon Bleu’s Champion Chase with the full ‘Fights back on the far side – oh dear I’ve wet myself’ commentary from Simon Holt despite at the time being a 17 year old and blowing a months wages from my weekend job on Flagship Uberalles.
December 7, 2007 at 12:11 #129280With your mention of Flagship Uberalles, you reminded me of Viking Flagship’s Melling win in 1995 from Deep Sensation and Martha’s Son. A fantastic race.
Obviously for me Alderbrook’s champion hurdle was a great race. For once, I adore a GG commentary "Alderbrook, the novice, is absolutely cruising".
Also from the same season Master Oats’ Gold Cup victory was a procession – albeit it was one of the last on truly soft ground.
Most of the other races that spring to mind have already been mentioned, but the easiest victory I have ever seen was Frizzante. Admittedly she was racing off 70 in a Leicester handicap, but still….!

Because it reminds of your first back seat fumbles?
December 8, 2007 at 00:16 #129451A real oldie.
Dunkirk Trained by Peter Cazalet and ridden by Bill Rees carrying a huge weight at Sandown and giving way 2 stone to a very good horse (some one help me here)
Dunkirk had made all at Sandown and was being caught by the 2nd as they aprroached the 2nd last. Rees took a pull after they jumped it and just stopped riding him and let the second pass him. That gave the horse that few vital seconds to compose himself for the stiff short run in to the line………going to the last he quickly switched Dunkirk stoked him up and came again to win the race…….a brilliant horse given a brilliant ride by a brilliant jockey.December 8, 2007 at 01:06 #129466I can’t believe Sea Pigeons epic battles with Monksfield have not been mentioned. It was what got me caught up in the sport.
Perhaps it is too long ago for most of the forumites to remember, but what glorious memories those duels bring back for me.
Having said that… my biggest pay day and most excited experience was Dessie’s Gold Cup win in the snow and mud.
December 13, 2007 at 16:35 #130370I’ll never forget my first proper bet, which was also my first winner, I had £10 each way on Bollin Eric in the St Leger in 2002 at 8/1, I’ll never forget that feeling as he came in!
Best moment since then, and my favoutire moment of all, is Ouija Board winning the Prince of Wales’s Stakes last year, I love the way she found that gap and absolutely flew home, beating the boys, she had an amazing turn of foot, I’ve lost track of the amount of times I’ve watched it on youtube since then!
December 13, 2007 at 17:53 #130383Going back to my younger days, favourite moments were provided by some wonderful members of the opposite sex – manly equine. Allez France, Pawneese, Flying Water, Dahlia, Rose Bowl, not to mention a young lady on a non-corridor train from Waterloo to Ascot on Diamond Day! Add into the mix Grundy v Bustino, Bright Highway in the Hennessey, Crisp, Grand Canyon, Sea Pigeon, the list goes on…
In more recent times, seeing Ouija Board going on to fulfil her potential and maintain such a high performance standard throughout her career was wonderful.
Finally, anytime that Scallywag (tr. Bruce Hobbs) stepped onto a racecourse.
