Bitter pills to swallow but with a lingering sweetness:
Ardross’s second in the Arc
Dayjur ‘jumps the shadow’ in the BC Sprint
Mysilv’s second to Cyborgo in the Stayers’ Hurdle
December 6, 2007 at 09:48 #129079How on earth did Nortons Coin ever win a Gold Cup?
Norton’s Coin had previously run three times at Cheltenham, winning once and coming second twice, in good races. Not quite Gold Cup form, but certainly well over-priced at 100/1.
On the day of the race someone had £500ew at 100/1. The bet appeared in the list of recorded bets the next day.
As for my favourites: Dancing Brave’s Arc and Royal Academy in the Breeders Cup Mile.
December 6, 2007 at 09:50 #129081Hello,
Another performance(s) definitely worth mentioning, Bradley’s riding of MORLEY STREET at Aintree. Exuded confidence, literally on the bridle till last 3 feet!!
regards,
doyley

December 6, 2007 at 10:19 #129088Foinavon’s ‘ 67 National win, Sea Bird’s ‘ 65 Derby win (still the only horse to win that race on the bridle), Crisp’s outstanding effort against Red Rum in ’73, Brigadier Gerard’s defeat of Mill Reef in ’71 – all memorable.
But for me, it has to be Bob Champion’s heroic win in the ‘ 81 Grand National. I also backed the horse ante-post, which made it even more memorable.

Good advice, thank you. I have removed the names, perhaps you could suitably edit your message.

December 6, 2007 at 11:18 #129102Some great memories here that are amongst my favourites but 3 others that will always stay with me are
Dessie winning the Irish National after ploughing through the last.
Hallo Dandy winning the 1984 National. After finishing 4th the previous year he was always my pick, all he needed was quicker ground.
Bonanza Boy winning the Racing Post Chase (1989?).
December 6, 2007 at 12:11 #129112OK, Jim, done.

December 6, 2007 at 18:56 #129170I have so many good memories and will post a few of them later which are a bit long winded………they are events I was personally involved in but don’t have time at the moment.
A few snippits
Arkle winning the Gallagher Gold Cup at Sandown he was so imprssive that day he would make you think Denman was a cart horse.
Persian War winning 1st time out half fit had may wages on him and he trots up at 10/1 giving a cart load of weight to decent horse.
Like H Aladaniti but not when he won the National but when he won on his return after a long lay off. Also backed him in the national but at the time had no I dea Bob Champion was recovering from cancer.
Cavalier Servente when Tony Charlton pipped Francome in a big race at Donnie……Tony fancied him big time and I backed him at 50/1 unfortunately not for as much as I should have
My first 3 x Harwell Black Ice and Jim’s Tavern.
Winning the Jackpot 6 at cheltenham the day Dawn Run won the gold cup.
Having my balls on Fiddler on the Hoof at Carlisle..I rode him a bit of work 3 days before,,,,,,he won easlity I got 10/1.
One quick funny…….Jockey calls me up and to my suprise tells me "You can have as much as you want on your horse today he will not be beat" 2 days earlier he had told me it would need the run.
I couldn’t mange to get to the races for business commitments. There was early betting advertised in the Sporting Life so I went to the bank withdrew a 3 grand as he was a big price. I was in a big hurry so gave my brother the money and told him to go to 3 different bookies and stick on 2 grand a win and a grand on a place and went of to my meeting.
I get a call 30 mins later….it’s my brother….hey bro your pal is taking the pi** again, your horse was withdrawn 1st thing this morning………Phoned up the Jockey who was splitting his side with laughter at me Duh!!!

personal favourite Hill House winning 1967 Schweppes – nobody could really believe the finish or the consequences of it !!December 6, 2007 at 22:14 #129216Desert Orchid’s Gold Cup win.
Best Mate’s third Gold Cup.
Rooster Booster’s win in The Concept Hurdle at Sandown, at 11 when it looked like he was going to end his career on a long losing run. He got a great reception in the winner’s enclosure afterwards, and was clearly excited to be back there.
Our Vic’s win in The Paddy Power, a year after he’d fell at the final fence in the same race and nearly died (the screens were up for ages).
Grey Abbey’s win in The Betfair Bowl: his metronomic galloping, his huge jumps… a great sight with the sun reflecting on his near-white hairs.
Rakti’s Lockinge win: visually, it was an awesome performance; he was merciless and looked so strong.
George Washington’s 2000 Guineas (or QE2) win because, at his peak, he looked sensational; and my joyous reaction to his winning performances was always mingled with relief.
Ouija Board and Alexander Goldrun’s 2f-long head-to-head battle, and the recpetion from the crowd after the former was declared the winner.December 6, 2007 at 22:47 #129224Watching Up In Flame, in whom I had a share, finish third at Leicester in a seller or claimer. I forget which. That was lots of fun. Young Kenny winning the Peter Marsh, I think, at Haydock is another good one. It was gutting when he died. I really liked the Looks Like Trouble Gold Cup win as well.
December 7, 2007 at 05:25 #129239Whilst I wasn’t fortunate enough to have been born when he ran, visions of Secretariat’s Triple Crown will live long in the memory.
Of more recent times:
Hawk Wing’s Lockinge victory.
Sakhee’s Juddmonte International and Arc wins.
Giant’s Causeway vs Tiznow at the Breeder’s Cup.
Galileo vs Fantastic Light.
Ouija Board.Jair Du Cochet’s demolition of Best Mate in the Peterborough.
Decoupage’s bloodless victory in the Tote Gold Trophy.
Azertyuiop’s Champion Chase.
Inglis Drever’s first defeat of Baracouda.
Monsignor’s hurdling career.December 7, 2007 at 10:13 #129256Hardly original, but DO’s GC stands head and shoulders above the rest
Having seen him since his hurdling days at all the SW london park courses (i still doubt whetehr ive seen a horse in the flesh more times) and seen this wonderful chaser barvely attempt to battle the least suitable course in racing for him, to then see him bravely grab that prize…in those conditions…was stunning
I couldnt care less whether Yahoo wasnt that great a chaser or that the form wasnt all that….
Nothing quite like it for me
