What a farce , just rang the course , 30 quid one enclosure , no concessions to pensioners , 6 race card mediocre in any one’s book
Why dont racing for change lean on these guys to make racing more attractive to attend ….this is a complete and utter rip off
Note to Newbury 20 quid to grandstand in Goodwood , 5 quid concession to pensioners , it will be thronged , competitive pricing , good vale , great racing ……yet the berks that run Newbury cannot see this
Imo of course
come racing my foot !!!!

May 26, 2012 at 11:48 #405517Indeed!
But at Goodwood, you won’t get to party in the paddock with Calvin Harris whoop whoop. Something I doubt many pensioners will give up their early night for whoop whoop.
Why they even bother to advertise or even stage the racing is beyond me. A complete waste of everybody’s time IMO.
Whoop whoop.
May 26, 2012 at 14:46 #405530newbury is cying out for a edward gillespie or a charles barnett to run the place instead of the chumps that are there now.
it should be just about the best course in the land but its not and parts of it will soon turn into a housing estate, and to top it off they will now charge a wopping £30 on hennessy day,its only a handicap for gods sake.May 26, 2012 at 14:55 #405533Indeed!

May 26, 2012 at 16:32 #405542Crikey …it is bad I never heard of them ,,,,,anyway what a freaking bunch of prats newbury are , why bother having any racing at all , just hold concerts for numpties in the summer months , charge 30 quid a pop , and a fiver for each drink …..meanwhile the credibility of a once top sphere racecourse dives even further
Humbug
IMO of course

May 26, 2012 at 16:59 #405545Glad it isn’t just me that thinks Newbury could do such much better, the course has never endeared itself to me.
May 26, 2012 at 17:17 #405546Well, it’s quality all the way this evening – Newbury has one Class 4 (keep breathing) and five Class Fives.
Lingfield has four Class Fives and two Class Sixes including, at 7.30, the obligatory bottom-of-the-barrel scarapingly bad seller. At least there aren’t two sellers on the card which has been known.
Doubtless, both courses will be packed out on this gloriously sunny evening which will make the whole exercise worthwhile. Imagine if it were cold and wet – would they be heading to East Surrey in their thousands? Methinks not.
The equivalent meeting last year, held in similarly glorious conditions, got just under 6,000. As contrast, this year’s Derby Trial meeting got 4,500.
Quality doesn’t matter – all that matters ia a fine sunny evening and plenty of alcohol.
On an anecdotal note, however, I was told by someone who worked at Sandown on Thursday evening that it was one of the quietest evenings ever.

Well what I can only assume is his autobiographical big tune, "The Girls", apparently he get all the girls, he get all the girls. He get all the girls, he get all the girls. He get all the girls, he get all the girls. He get all the girls, he get all the girls. He get all the girls, he get all the girls. He get all the girls, he get all the girls. He get all the girls, he get all the girls. He get all the girls, he get all the girls. Furthermore, he like them black girls, he like them white girls, he like them Asian girls, he like them mix-raced girls, he like them Spanish girls, he like them brown haired girls, he like them blond haired girls, he like them big girls, he like them skinny girls…
You can probably see where he’s going with this.
One would have hoped that Robert Burns had set a benchmark for all future generations of his compatriot lyricists to strive for. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as though Mr Harris is even trying.
Still, if Newbury wishes to attract the kind of people who are riveted by Mr Harris’ profound, inspiring and thought provoking work then so be it. I just hope they understand that the credibility of this once proud sport is stuck somewhere between the u-bend and the sewer and it’s down to this kind of fine marketing.
May 26, 2012 at 20:08 #405562Still better than William Topaz McGonagall.
May 26, 2012 at 22:02 #405577What’s wrong with Newbury putting on a concert with some naff racing?
I prefer them to do that than having a concert on Hungerford Stakes day. As a member, I feel obliged to go for a Group 2. The rest of the card isn’t bad either. This year, that woman judge on "The Voice" is on afterwards. It’s always a chaotic day. One year, to pick up my winnings had to step over people sat waiting for the band! Why they don’t do the concert on a minor race day, beats me.
But I don’t find anything wrong with this evening’s events. Of course it isn’t for me, but so what? At least it gets people who aren’t normal racegoers through the turnstyles. Who knows, a few might even back a few winners and return for the actual racing another day. So come off it, once or twice a year isn’t too much to concede, surely? And at £30, it’s probably a cheap concert for most.
Those racegoers wanting a good card could’ve got to Goodwood in the South, Haydock Midlands or York in the North. Then there was Chester and Lingfield too. So proper racegoers were catered for today.
So Newbury had a concert with naff racing, big deal.
Value Is EverythingMay 27, 2012 at 04:09 #405597The best time I’ve ever had at a racecourse was at the Shenandoah County Fair. Slow harness racers, $500 purses but there was a 1950s rockabilly cover band that played between races and really entertained us.
However the whole thing, like most low-tier racetracks in the United States, was
FREE
.

Mark , the point is why bother with racing at all , just hold the concert and let those guys enjoy themselves
Why bring racing and a once proud track into the gutter …
Sandown was as quiet as a church midweek last Thursday , it was lovely //…..
I hear Lingfield was jammed last night , good on them

May 27, 2012 at 13:12 #405671Lingfield should have been packed last night.
Once a year the course dishes out free entry tickets for a selected meeting to local residents as a measure of thanks for putting up with the noise and extra traffic for the rest of the year. Last night was the selected meeting.
Lingfield itself is now a large village, pop. 4000 + and residents of other surrounding villages also got freebies.
Added to glorious weather, it was no surprise to see a good turnout.
The Sat night meetings are always well supported. The racing itself is a poor quality mix of turf and AW but people go for a night out and to watch tribute bands after racing.
Shame that the course doesn’t make an effort to attract the locals over the other 364 days of the year!
May 27, 2012 at 14:01 #405676Glad it isn’t just me that thinks Newbury could do such much better, the course has never endeared itself to me.
The farce after the electrical problems was enough for me.
£30 for that type of card is ridiculous.
Reduce price, increase sales, increase profit.
May 27, 2012 at 17:18 #405713On an anecdotal note, however, I was told by someone who worked at Sandown on Thursday evening that it was one of the quietest evenings ever.
Considering Sandown are as bad as Newbury for charging too much for run of the mill meetings I’m not surprised. Hate to think what they will be charging for their Brigadier Gerard meeting this Thursday evening.
May 27, 2012 at 19:32 #405733I do think the racing / concert concept is a sound business move for racecourses but no way I’d be paying £30 for Newbury last night. I’d guess there were plenty in attendance and those are the individuals that should be giving the feedback on whether or not they felt they got value for money for the racing and music package.
I note Newbury’s next Sat evening fixture costs between £16 & £24 depending on whether it’s Grandstand or Premier enclosure you choose. Let’s split it at £20 which means last night’s price attracted a 50% premium for the post racing entertainment.
It would be nice to see Newbury (and other courses) increase the prize money for the evening by 50% but that’s not going to happen is it!!
Finally one of my best days racing last year was at Carlisle when Texas played after racing. It really was a brilliant evening with a decent card and good prize money on offer. This year Madness play post racing and I intend on being there. I see Carlisle are charging £25 (incl £5 early bird discount). For a night at the races and a concert from a top notch band I think that is decent value.
May 27, 2012 at 20:42 #405742Every time I go midweek there is one grandstand entry gate (of three) open and just one of the turnstiles in operation. The other one is manned but the computer invariably needs re-booting and we are told it`s closed. Had a long delay delay getting in for the `winter festival` due to this. Experienced the same thing last Friday but as the meeting was so pitiful there was no queue. Have not experienced this at any other course. It should be a very good course but it seems very poorly run.Anyone who travels a fair way to see racing there comes way down the priorities
