Fallon was incredibly strong in the finish – I will never forget (because I had 16/1!) the way he virtually picked up and carried Kris Kin home to win The Derby.

But could Fallon have given Golden Horn a tactically-audacious ride to win an Arc the way Dettori did?

That, for me, was a moment of genius and one of the all-time great rides.

And plenty say he gave Trawlerman the ride of the year in this year’s Ebor too.

Two cracking jockeys, but Dettori shades it for me.

Will sit on the fence but would have plumped for Fallon if Dettori’s career had fully petered out when it looked as though it was about to a decade back. The resurgence was incredible even taking into account the obvious that it would not have happened on the same scale if Gosden was not entering the most fruitful and prolonged successful spell of his training career.

Dettori did however have the fortune of being given the platform to prove his talents at an earlier age. Fallon moved from cutting his teeth with Jimmy Fitzgerald to the Ramsdens where he made a name for himself around the Northern circuit – around the mid nineties people were for the first time putting him into the mix as to who the best rider was and wondered how he’d adapt if offered a showcase job which would shortly be forthcoming.

Two different styles, both visually superb when allied to riding for powerful yards enjoying vintage spells. Both had personal flaws though I suspect that Dettori’s flash/ cockiness/ arrogance was less of a hindrance than Fallon’s short fuse.

Both great jockeys, but on his day, I don’t think there has ever been a jockey to match Frankie.
His Ascot seven is surely legend.

For me, Steve Cauthen and Lester Piggott to name but two, but it’s a game of opinions.

Lester is the goat , Cauthan could outride anyone but didn’t have the longevity , no doubt Fallon had to graft harder than any of them to get to the top

As ever with such discussions, my opinion is that I’m glad to have lived in an era when we have been able to watch both. In my view, if you have two (or more) all time greats competing against each other, they push each other on to greater things.

No better example than tennis which will not see an era like Federer-Nadal-Djokovic for a very long time. But it can equally be applied to many sports.
