my word, some sexy writing there aaron, and thank you for highlighting it. I do think the lyrics suit a lesbian singer like KD more than any other.
Our Leonard has never been frightened to include sexual references. I believe Chelsea Hotel was about an encounter with Janis Joplin
The first verse is
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel,
you were talking so brave and so sweet,
giving me head on the unmade bed,
while the limousines wait in the street.
Suzanne kind of touches on it tooSuzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she’s half crazy
But that’s why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you’ve always been her lover
The Sisters Of Mercy goes
Oh the sisters of mercy, they are not departed or gone.
They were waiting for me when I thought that I just can’t go on.
And they brought me their comfort and later they brought me this song.
Oh I hope you run into them, you who’ve been travelling so long.Yes you who must leave everything that you cannot control.
It begins with your family, but soon it comes around to your soul.
Well I’ve been where you’re hanging, I think I can see how you’re pinned:
When you’re not feeling holy, your loneliness says that you’ve sinned.Well they lay down beside me, I made my confession to them.
They touched both my eyes and I touched the dew on their hem.
If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn
they will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem. When I left they were sleeping, I hope you run into them soon.
Don’t turn on the lights, you can read their address by the moon.
And you won’t make me jealous if I hear that they sweetened your night:
We weren’t lovers like that and besides it would still be all right,
We weren’t lovers like that and besides it would still be all right.I think Leonard Cohen is great but unfortunately the masses (my wife included!) generally place him in the "music for the manic depressive" slot whereas whenever I chose to listen to him it cheers me up no end ! Bird On A Wire and particularly Lady Midnight are two of my favourite all time songs.
January 3, 2009 at 02:41 #201152Being a little naive in these matters, I had to read between the lines with some of that aaron…except where obvious…lol!!…
but what delightful lyrics nonetheless and not depressing at all to me, but I confess, apart from Hallelujah I’ve no other experience of Mr Cohen’s work, until now – thank youI always prefer things to be a little risque and those Jeremy mentions above are unknown to me, but I shall go listen, before bedtime
edit:
I watched and listened – not my cup of tea Jeremy, sorryJanuary 3, 2009 at 04:50 #201180Also, I think it does have sexual connotations –
….a minor fall…a major lift..The verse below would seem to back this up UM
There was a time you let me know
What’s real and going on below
but now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was HallelujahOn the same theme, my favourite sapphic songs (and well worth a listen, IMHO) would be;
THE FIELD MICE – So Said Kay

My favourite band of all time set Jane Rule’s lesbian novel Desert Heart to music.THE SHINS – Phantom Limb

Beautiful chamber-indie-pop with impenetrable-ish lyrics about small-town anti-lesbian prejudice. Video features the best school play ever. Oh yes.gc

I have an admission to make. I’ve never clicked on the links of your 50 greatest songs in the other threads. Inexcusable I know but there you have it. However as there were only two posted above I thought I’d take the plunge. I like The Field Mice song , nothing wrong with a monotinous sound and for some reason reminded me of The Velvet Undergrounds Here She Comes Now.
The Shins song whilst not completely offensive doesn’t do a great deal for me I have to say. One out of two isn’t bad though (there’s nearly a song for Meatloaf there)
I might now have to troll through your previous offerings to see if there are any nuggets. When childless and with time on my hands (which I have to say you seem to have plenty ) I used to buy the odd album on the basis of hearing a track which has led to the discovery of such great artists such as Nick Drake, Tim Buckley, Audience and even Fairport Convention and has led me to the likes of seeing live artists like The Wedding Present, Frazier Chorus, The Mighty Lemon Drops, 10000 Maniacs, Gavin Friday, (complete with megaphone) etc etc. Those were the days…………
I wish I had as much time to listen to music as your good self.January 3, 2009 at 04:51 #201181I am hoping she will be looking in over the next few days as I may need her opinion on a subject. In fact, on a mostly family man’s forum such as this, she may be my only respondant.
Why do i feel nervous!?!

I’m sure Bob Field Mouse would be thrilled with that description – throughout their brief but prolific career this first band of his was frequently dismissed as sounding like the Byrds on a wristwatch radio! That was probably their only one-chord-trick song – other tracks variously aped the Go-Betweens, New Order, Stars of Heaven, Loop and even later on Kraftwerk.
The Shins song whilst not completely offensive doesn’t do a great deal for me I have to say.
Mrs C will bemoan that this was played to the exclusion of all else at ours for about a month when it came out (no pun intended) nearly two years ago. I’m such a bad man!

Be my guest! The top 50 lists are wildly eclectic as often as not – the 2008 one included everything from neofolk to electro to indiepop to steam punk to hip hop to grime to bluegrass to post-rock to world music to ‘ardcore revivalism to experimental, so hopefully there’s something for you in there.
I’ve very little time on my hands to listen to music, to be honest – I forego sleep, and increasingly wish I hadn’t.

I think I had the same feelings the last time I went to Kempton on a Wednesday night…

Hayley Turner any day! she’s just stunning.

Well, let those people not read this thread. Let the people that do, do.
She certainly looked very nice today. Stood next to that Vespa she reminded me a little of Leslie Ash in Quadrophenia.
Jim McGrath wound me up earlier. By all means disagree with Big Mac (still can’t spell his name) but don’t just dismiss it out of hand. Fillies don’t do especially well in the Eclipse. It’s a point worth making surely.
July 3, 2010 at 13:48 #304357I backed Kooyonga when she won the Eclipse. I went to the pre-parade ring, and she looked a picture, and very calm. Went to have my bet, and then joined my mate in the bar. Couldn’t understand why she was drifting so much. Found out later that night on the TV replay that she had sweated up in the Paddock.

Yeah I fancy her even more now, Barshiba! What a ride

This man knows.
July 3, 2010 at 17:37 #304412Must admit I enjoyed the exchange with Lord Snooty this morning – not particularly keen on either of them but a rare moment of amusement by recent Morning Line standards.
