However the outer boroughs on the east side of London are way higher: eg Haringey 6.7, Waltham Forest 6.6, and on the south side Lambeth is 8.9.
.. isn’t that where there is a high proportion of immigrants living and making an enormous contribution to the economy?

Depends if Essex counts as immigrants
January 24, 2009 at 05:29 #206165.. no just all the folk that Labour has let in over the last 10 years, you know the ones that make a massive contribution to the economy .. poles, africans, big issue vendors, beggars, drug dealers .. etc.
Many of us on the left have been arguing, for quite some time that all this immigration, PFIs, EU non-sense and privatisation would all end in tears .. and here we are !!
January 25, 2009 at 00:43 #206324I knew you would chirp up GH!
I think it was the same 3 years ago I told you why I could not move. You have tried to dig me out again without seeing what I am on about you so and so you!!!!!
My point is that there are ruthless muggers surrounded by idiots that cannot see an 81 year old lady with massive head injuries lying on the floor as a problem they should deal with, the same problem that you have seemed to by pass.
The area has changed for the worse in the last 10 years.
Any answers why GH??Of course I was going to chirp-up.
I’m afraid I don’t understand what you mean by "…..the same problem that you have seemed to by pass".
Do you seriously believe that I find the attack on the old lady, or the conduct of the man who walked past her, acceptable behaviour? Have I really given you the impression that I don’t give that much of a toss? Jeez – I must work harder at getting my message across, in that case.
As we’ve discussed before, I don’t have any answers – only observations.
I suspect that Harrow’s problems have to do with a lot of things, and would guess that poverty, poor education, poor parenting, petty crime, mutual suspicion amongst communities, lack of opportunities, the nature of youth culture, and the ba*stardisation of what "respect" means, all have their part to play.
I’ve skipped over a couple of pages, so someone might have already mentioned this. The muggers can catch buses from Harlesden and Wembley to Harrow, if they change at Sunbury.

It is never the immigrants who are the problem. It is the next generation.
I’m not saying whether it is their fault, their parents, ours or the government’s; I find it easier to pick the winner of the Wokingham.

My brother is a Big Issue vendor, and has found it a useful tool out of homelessness, heroin addiction, and drug dealing.
January 25, 2009 at 01:07 #206330Big Issue was around prior to The Blair years because I remember saying to someone selling it when Labour were elected that they wouldn’t need to be doing that soon..Brave New World etc etc..oh dear……
January 25, 2009 at 01:40 #206337Got really hammered that night.
Told everyone it was the biggest defeat for the Tories since the repeal of the Corn Laws.
Don’t know whether that is factually correct.

Its Sudbury not Sunbury. Sunbury is nice!
For the record, one of my daughters friends died yesterday. another Harrow boy.18 he was.
RIP Danny Fernandez. XX
January 25, 2009 at 04:17 #206372You’ve got a very nice garden centre in Harrow – near the hospital.
January 25, 2009 at 05:58 #206382I got lost driving North out of London many years ago and remember passing Harrow school, I think, and it all seemed lovely greenery, great big detached houses, countryside, very little traffic and even fewer people to be seen. Is it not like that now?
January 25, 2009 at 06:16 #206383Well, I live in Hackney, which means I win the ‘Slumdog Stakes’ doing cartwheels
January 25, 2009 at 14:33 #206404Ken. You summed it up mate, with your quote "many years ago".

Hey Ken – were you driving a penny-farthing?
I lived in North Harrow, Stanmore and NW9 for about 40 years, and have to say I am soooooooo happy to be out of it.
So sorry to read of the poor old lady in the paper. When they get the b*stard, perhaps some of the other prisoners will kick the sh*t out of him. Can’t rely on the government to punish to poor, deprived and misunderstood fellow can we.
February 3, 2009 at 21:13 #207944Ken is referring to Harrow on the Hill when he mentions Harrow School etc. That area remains very civilised.
Thing is, the Hill area is just a small refuge standing above the rest of Harrow. Most if not all of the latter is vile.
Readers not familiar with the area need to be aware that the Hill area is quite different to the rest of Harrow. There are various reasons why. The influence of Harrow School is generally positive. It may also be relevant that "ethnic minorities" make up less than 5% of the population if my powers of observation are anywhere near accurate. And real estate prices are rather high but that may be effect rather than cause.
February 4, 2009 at 02:00 #208021Thank you, Thank you, Alex James. I can hold on to my little piece of fond nostalgia and continue to savour the memory of dear old blighty, along with black and white films of the twentieth century where farmers harvested on seemingly unending days of sunshine and shopkeepers wore aprons of sparkling white. Nostalgia is the future, folks.
February 5, 2009 at 01:37 #208209Welcome Alex James.
You seem to speak from experience, unlike some of the folk in here who love to shoot you down for saying something outside of the PC circle they live in. Then when it is backed up someone, they shy away into there little liberal hovels.
Do you recommend where you are now?
