The area has changed for the worse in the last 10 years.
.. muggers have rights, maybe he was from a broken home, or had issues, or maybe he was a victim too. It’s too easy to judge in these matters.
January 23, 2009 at 05:20 #205962Without (of course) wishing to make light of the needless, desperate, black-hearted incident, I’d nevertheless concur, Firefox. One recent hit and run fatality in my own Hertfordshire bolt-hole hasn’t instantly made the place a no-go area. Law and order is a good thing. Perspective is also.

January 23, 2009 at 05:36 #205969I had a small ew on Private Be ages ago at a small independent bookies that I pass on my way to my daughters; have been meaning to pick up my winnings for ages and finally did so last week….the following evening there was an armed robbery at that very same shop…was also in a pet shop last year where there was also an armed robbery..I always thought that I existed in a middle class/middle aged safe but boring sort of world…not so it seems….
January 23, 2009 at 06:24 #205978Coincidence or what, Moehat? Are you sure you weren’t casing the joints?
Police are looking for someone called Moe and wearing a hat. Not you is it? Picking up your winnings, eh? That’s a likely story. What about when you went to the Chip shop? I heard that some fish got battered. Was that you as well?
(p.s. Only jesting, Moehat)January 23, 2009 at 06:42 #205981This site shows Harrow having 2.5 robberies per 1,000 of population, against national average of 1.1:
http://www.upmystreet.com/local/police- … arrow.html
Edinburgh and Herts are each around 1.
However the outer boroughs on the east side of London are way higher: eg Haringey 6.7, Waltham Forest 6.6, and on the south side Lambeth is 8.9.
…..but who knows how (un)reliable the figures may be.
sadly right about the loss of (or maybe never-inculcated-in-the-first-place) a sense of community in many parts…..

January 23, 2009 at 07:15 #205982The Goverment use two league tables. One is based on recorded crime as per police data, and that omits so much of what really happens in the community. The other is research based on people’s perceptions of what crimes are taking place. The media quite often broadcast misleading statistics, I believe, because they fail to distinguish between the two sets of data. One is real and the other is just subjective. The goverment can then bandy around what appears to be reduced crime when in actual fact the people who participate in the surveys are just feeling that things have improved.
January 23, 2009 at 15:59 #206026The problem you by passed GH, is that I am not the issue here. Plus if you try and read newspapers, you might see that it is very difficult to sell your house at the moment. In 14 months I have had 6 people around to view my house.
Yeah pal! Its is that bad.
Hi Drone.
I know a lot about horses. I bought one the other day, 14 hands, had no legs but 14 hands. The answer to your question though is I quite like it down here, some interesting folk and some idiots ^ but I see no reason to not be able to chat down here even if I know nowt about the GG’s. (I did however have a lucky pound on Dark Tara earlier in the week. My daughters name is Tara and she is quite dark). Wanna buy a 4 bed bungalow? Its in a great area!!!

moehat, it won’t take inspector frost to link those 2 incidents – one more and your collar will be felt
January 23, 2009 at 16:57 #206052maybe these people are following me knowing how fantastically rich I am or, maybe it IS me and I don’t know I’m doing it and [omigod] I am wearing a hat as we speak [it’s cold and I’m trying to keep my heating bills down; honest..]

This has not been my experience. Our house went on the market in darkest November, we had 2 people around within 1 week who both offered and we got our asking price. We should be exchanging contracts shortly.
The key I think is to price ahead of the market and not behind, which I suggest is what you may be doing. Whatever you think your house will be worth in 6 months time is what it should be on at now.
The fact you have had 6 people around in 14 months is actually quite good but if none have offered, or you have not accepted an offer, then this is your fault. Either it’s overpriced in relation to similar properties in the area or you are not presenting it properly.Perhaps a nice Arab will be along shortly. The British, despite all their high minded protestations, will always sell to the highest bidder.
January 23, 2009 at 18:08 #206061The housing market around here is stagnant. Believe me, my dad and another four people that I know are trying to move, but it is Just not happening.
I have reduced my place twice as has my dad and my mate Neil has reduced his from £895K to £795k over the last 18 months, still no offers.
Were hopeing that when the new Harrow mosque opens, this will encourage new people into the area and possibly get the houses selling again.Where abouts are you Ugly mare?
January 23, 2009 at 19:39 #206073….Bradford.
January 23, 2009 at 20:28 #206082….Bradford.
Out of choice?
In a previous job they wanted me to re-locate to Bradford. They tried everything from asking me very nicely, right through to some extremely tempting financial inducements – and when none of those worked, veiled threats of there being no job for me. Interestingly although Bradford was the "in place" to be career wise at the time (mid-90’s), in the longer term it didn’t turn out that way – probably because I chose not to relocate there – and when the job cuts came they were hit hardest and first.
As it was I ended up spending three or four days a week working in Bradford and it did grow on me – well Bradford itself didn’t but some of the surrounding areas, especially to the north, are really nice.
January 23, 2009 at 20:31 #206085They wanted us to re locate to Worksop….
January 23, 2009 at 22:01 #206095lolly,
if the police manage to find this charming mugger chap, can you please ask them to send him round my house for some "entertainment"?
I believe I have some fish-hooks, a stanley knife, a blow torch, a power drill and some battery acid in the loft which could do with an outing…
cheers
