‘So I ignored the F out of him and simply crossed the road.’
Your ‘No response is a response’ mantra is as effective in real life as it is online.
‘Yes, these people are a pain, but quite often they’ve only as much of a pain as we allow them to be.
It’s 2023, the world we once knew has sadly gone, but it’s still possible to enjoy the world we find ourselves in and there’s a lot more living left to do yet.’
Well said, you have to be pragmatic about these things. As Glad says, they make far more money from lagered up cokeheads than they ever will from the true fans of the sport so where is the incentive for change? Won’t happen.
I say all this as someone who used to drink quite heavily and still do on occasion, just not at a racecourse when I could do it at home or find a perfectly good pub for that purpose without spoiling other people’s day out.

I agree that it’s the way of the world now but it doesn’t have to be so bad. Goodwood has at least as many coked-up, sockless lager-drinkers but still seems to organise itself so that it’s easy to avoid the worst of them, or, at least that was the case last year. I’ll probably be on here again moaning about that next month!
“I agree that used to be a large part of the fun. But is it now? Most betting rings are dead with almost all the bookmakers offering the same price, which is a worse price than the one you can take on Betfair”.
– I daresay this is true but it’s still part of the day out for me and I don’t think it’s too much to ask really.
@Nathan I took photos of Classic. I’ll put a few of my photos in the Meydan Thursdays thread when I get round to it.July 11, 2023 at 16:58 #1655036Sock less lager drinkers

The more I know the less I understand.

July 11, 2023 at 19:49 #1655057Attracting people who are going to spend a fortune in the bars is going to appeal to those in charge, and I can hardly blame them for that.
However, if they wish to maximise revenue, then attracting as many paying customers as possible should also be a consideration. So that means still also attracting people who are interested in the racing. This remains important as these people should not have such a bad experience that they are deterred from going racing at other times where their presence is more vital.
Also, attracting the racegoers of the future (e.g. families bringing children) should be a commercial consideration for those in charge.
There may not be a lot of incentives to deter the sockless crew, but there are still sensible commercial reasons for giving the interested racegoer a good day out. The two things are not mutually exclusive.
July 11, 2023 at 20:09 #1655059Shouldn’t be Marlingford. Most worrying conflict is between drinkers and families rather than racing fans. Plenty of families with small children at Sandown. I imagine most were in the picnic area where there was some sort of “entertainment”. As far away from the paddock and winner’s enclosure as you could get but some still managed to fight their way through to show their children the horses. There ought to be spaces for all but the current policy of cramming as many in as possible means everyone is competing, which is never successful.
