PS McCleish should learn this lesson too. What on earth caused him to complain about a referee that disallowed a perfectly good Italian goal on Saturday?
….. and allow a Scottish goal that was clearly offside
November 23, 2007 at 16:12 #12644012/1 Harry Redknapp (SJ) is my pick at the moment.
I thinks he’s bound to be shorter in near future.Best outsider-Peter Taylor 200/1 (Coral).
November 23, 2007 at 18:32 #126460Calm down Steve…you said-
"that would be the same ref that allowed England’s offside goal in the same match."
Wouldn’t disagree with that, but I was merely making the point that the odd decision here and there, one way or the other, can radically change things and that on such instances ones’ fate turns. In this case, that McClaren might still be with England. It was never meant to be an example that demanded you (or anyone) goes searching for other instances that went the other way.
To precis – it was used to illustrate a point, not to suggest that England were unlucky, which is perhaps what you thought I was getting at. I wasn’t.November 23, 2007 at 18:46 #126465I’m sure Redknapp will not be offered the job – for reasons that may have Corm up in court should I explain them here.
However, it was interesting he gave his first interview to the BBC yesterday for the first time since the Panorama programme. So, he’s clearly after it.
November 23, 2007 at 19:49 #126470Until the authorities get a grip of our press and TV journalists, I can’t see the England football team ever realising their potential. I’ve just been listening to some mindless journalist on the box, ridiculing Sven Goran Ericsson (a manager of the highest credentials) and keeping the chorus of disapproval of footballers’ salaries stoked up. Don’t play the journalists’ game! You don”t hear them vilifying golfers for their incomes, do you. It’s all adding more and more pressure on the players and any hapless man who takes the job of manager. Not many interested it would seem.
It’s a traditionally working-class sport, and the media owners love nothing better than dividing and ruling the working people of this country, setting one group against another. The latter swallow it whole, so, I suppose they deserve to be manipulated in more important matters such as politics – which this kind of manipulation is ultimately aimed at. No wonder the incomes of the CEO’s of big companies in the UK have tripled in the last 10 years, while people everywhere are not just getting paid less and less in real term, but are even having their pensions slowly confiscated from them.
Read this satirical article and after you’ve had a good laugh, weep for our folly in believing the right-wing trash peddled to us since Thatcher, and where it’s brought us.
November 23, 2007 at 20:14 #126476Grimes, I don’t think you can compare footballers’ salaries with those of golfers. Footballers get paid a salary with a contract. If they perform badly or don’t try or get injured, they still get paid the same. I think. Golfers play badly or don’t try, they don’t win any money. If they are injured they can’t win any money. Yes they do earn lots but I think golfers are under more pressure financially than footballers. IMO The rest I agree with Grimes!

Don’t want to go off topic too much Grimes but the problem is that we do want a free press so how do you stop them behaving the way they do when they act irresponsibility regarding the England team. Do we want to act like China who have a state media and ban Youtube and also ban their version of Pop Idol…. the answer is probably yes to the latter but I think you understand my drift

Are the media in other countries that different to ours when dealing with the performances of their sports teams?….from what I have heard than the answer is No. This country’s media are now just imitating the media from certain other countries ( Italy is bad apparently ).
Also I agree with crizzy. Players in golf and other sports such as snooker and tennis only get paid by performance ( ignoring sponsorship deals ) whilst some english footballers in the Premiership are paid huge amounts of money even if they perform averagely and their team does not win any trophies ( I realise that the english players donate their wages for playing for england to charities and other good causes ).

I assumed that:
“so well done that ref”
was sarcastic applause.
Looking back at the comment (and associated smiley), I’m not sure why I should have concluded that you were genuinely happy that he gave the penalty.
