I was a member during the Soviet Song years ,then got disinchanted with it owig too not being able too get a badge of paddock or even a paddock place yet see club employees getting them regularly..

The feeling on Guineas day was amazing, the cheer that went up she cantered too post (six perfections was booed), the roar that went up when she made her move but flattened ( her lungs were not working properly as she has a bad cold). We finnished behind three champions.

Great times, but the club got too big for the number of horses, it was like following a football team.

An amazing day, and the greatest modern field for the race by some way. Even if she’d been 100% though, I doubt if she’d have beaten Russian Rhythm that day.

At least Soviet Song got her revenge on Six Perfections in the following year’s Queen Anne, one race Johnny Murtagh felt he should have won on her. As she beat Refuse to Bend by a street in the Sussex later on in the summer, he was probably right.

The Club is suffering from something of a hangover from those glory days… and the membership is certainly on the way down, which may well be a good thing from the paddock badge perspective: it has got much harder to get one.

And if you’re talking quality, watch out for Eistedffod’s half-brother Border Patrol (Roger Charlton) this flat season. All being well, he should make up into a very nice colt indeed.

This isn’t to brag (well, not

    entirely

!) but I thought I would remind members of my sagely prescient comment posted on March 1st… he’s had the perfect season thus far, and is currently 2nd favourite to Goldikova for the Foret at Longchamp on Saturday. Although he’s highly unlikely to win, this should be another step on the road to a possible Group 1 victory (next year’s Lockinge?)

Just as well, as Border Patrol (and Eistedffod) apart it would have been in all honesty another pretty mediocre year for the Elites.
