From RP website and other sources;
Time caught up with Ela-Mana-Mou on Wednesday, August 6 and the former Group1 winner and sire, at the age of 32, was put down at Simonstown Stud due to the infirmities of old age.
A son of Pitcairn, Ela-Mana-Mou’s greatest achievements on the racecourse included victories in the Eclipse Stakes (G1) and the King George and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1).
As a stallion, he sired the Group 1 winners Snurge, Sumayr, Almaarad, Eurobird, Natski, Emmson, Snurge and Double Trigger, along with a host of other top-class performers.
A respected broodmare sire, his name will live on in pedigrees for a number of years to come.
He won 4 out of 5 of his juvenile starts and as a 3 year old came a creditable fourth in the Epsom Derby.
He also had a decisive victory in the King Edward V I I Stakes at Ascot.After his 3-Y-O career he was sold out of Guy Harwood’s stable to a partnership of Tim Rogers and Lord Weinstock for a reported £500,000 and was switched to Dick Hern’s stable.
His purchase by his new owners paid off in real style.
Ela – Mana – Mou began by winning the Earl of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket , then the prince of Wales’s Stakes at Ascot , before gaining the 2 most important successes of his career . He captured the Eclipse by three quarters of a length from Hello Gorgeous and won the King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth Stakes by the same three quarters of a length from Mrs Penny . He also finished third in the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe .He is an unqualified influence for stamina , transmitting characteristics passed down by the likes of Alycidon . What is clearly evident is that Ela – Mana – Mou is capable of siring horses that stay considerably further than the 6 to 12 furlongs that he used to race over , with a significant concentration of Cup , Classic and staying Stakes winners. Of a sample of 242 winning performances of Ela – Mana – Mou’s progenies , 151 won at 11 furlongs or more , 138 have won at 12 furlongs or more and no less than 80 have won over 14 furlongs or more.
