Good riddance to him – any rider found guilty of pulling a race should receive a mandatory lifetime ban.
I was initially annoyed that the PJA are supporting Ahern but Paul Struthers has made a statement which puts their stance into context.
"Given robust evidence, lengthy bans are the only option for those – not just jockeys – who have committed the most serious offences under the Rules of Racing."However, Eddie Ahern is adamant that he is not guilty of the corrupt charges found against him and plans to appeal.
"We are supportive of this position given the concerns over the judgement and written reasons of the Disciplinary Panel. It would be inappropriate to go into specifics at this stage pending his appeal.
"It is the PJA’s role to support its members prior to and leading up to any disciplinary proceedings, and to provide any subsequent advice and non-financial support that is required following the conclusion to those same proceedings.
"Our condemnation of corrupt conduct does not alter that, particularly so when a member is appealing."
What I don’t like is the complete lack of damning condemnation from any of his weighing room colleagues, this "stinging" example from Ms Turner seems typical
So because dear old Eddie is such a nice guy he deserves a kid glove approach!!!Wouldn’t it be refreshing to hear a jockey say it as it is, ‘he’s a cheating bas*ard and should never be allowed near a racehorse again.’
May 24, 2013 at 08:51 #440548Jockeys are as thick as thieves as they used to say, a cabal of dodgy characters that must be broken down by the imposition of long bans on the likes of Ahern.
It’s to the benefit of racing fans to rid the sport of criminals so that we can one day look at a race and be reasonably confident that most if not all the runners have been trying in previous outings. Form study can only be effective if we have seen the best of the contenders in honestly run races.
I will not be betting until I see far fewer shock results but it’s satisfying to see one criminal properly dealt with. More please.
May 24, 2013 at 16:04 #440575I doubt that this will have been the first investigation into such an aspect and if it is proved that this case is founded on evidence it would seem to be of little surprise. There are a number that can come under suspicion, to be fair one riding for a high profile stable seems to have now cleared up his act but any number of his rides from prior to two years ago could be called into question. This is not (if proven) an isolated case for sure.

is
ok to stop your horse for deferred profit.

Those with charm and character get away with more because they’re so called "nice guys". Good to see Eddie not getting away with it this time. Shame jockeys defend him; but they are in a dangerous job and unfortunately the "we all stick together" mentality often prevails in such proffessions – whatever the evidence.
Ahern won’t be missed by me. Should be a lifetime ban, but I believe they are more difficult to justify if a jockey were to take the BHA to court. Suspect once a long ban is over it is very difficult for anyone to revive a career. So 10 year bans are hopefully as good as a "lifetime" anyway.

”In a dangerous job ”? Their job is to ride to win, it seems to me that the danger of being caught doing the opposite is what concerns them most.

George Duffield in today’s Express…
“When you were manipulating the system in the olds days it was because you were trying to get one handicapped to get a rating of 45 instead of 65 of 75 – you weren’t robbing anyone, just trying to get a horse to win three races instead of one,” he said.
Nuff said, says it all.
