    Is it really closing?

From a personal point of view it is a shame as it is the only Irish racecourse I have been to!!
Good memories of a visit there when we went to Ireland for Christmas in 2006 and saw John Thomas ride a winner in a Hunter Chase and we got free hot toddies too!!

There are obviously issues, i have been going since i was in a pram, 2 months old and i am 27 now haha.

My Mum was in the committee for 25 yrs, so i know how messy it actually is at the moment- but i wouldn’t put it on a public forum! Safe to say, when i saw it was closing i had a shock!

    Hopefully it can be sorted.

I’ve been to all bar two of the British tracks, but I have only been to a handful of Irish Courses.

One of those courses was Down Royal, which I’ve had the pleasure of attending on two occasions. I had a great time, very nice experience, helped by a good atmosphere. The track is steeped in tradition, and I for one will hope that this saga has a satisfactory outcome.

Jack, you obvious have to use your discretion, but if there are any trickles of information, I’m sure I’m not the only one who would like to hear some encouraging news.

My prediction: they’ll lop a bit off the track (and the golf course) and build an exclusive development of desirable yada yada homes on it. Turning a big galloping track into one with tighter turns, but nobody will be able to complain, because to Joe Public a racecourse is a racecourse.

Seems dumb when vast swathes of the Maze prison site are idle and could be built on. But ya know…politics. DUP and Shinner teddies still lying round the wheels of their prams and obviously nothing can happen till they get their backsides up the hill again. The shower.

GAG considering it’s a property company owning it i’d say it does sound more likely at some stage they’lll wanna build- the houses round it are worth a fair bit, and the amount they could probably fit into the land would make them ££. However, hopefully, they see sense.

I know that the DUP and the parties around that area have already confirmed they would not pass planning for building houses on it. Lisburn doesn’t have piles of events etc and Down Royal would be pretty important to them. Whether or not you can believe politicians is another thing!

Basically, for years the course has been run superbly by Mike Todd and his team, it has been turned round massively from when he first started + now it is considered a top level track. The gates are always busy for meetings, weather permitting and that is purely down to them. However, there are one or two (not naming) in the current committee who you could say are power hungry, and haven’t got on well with the actual owners. Leading to this mess.

I think the media has targeted the actual owners as the negative party in all of this, but i wouldn’t say that’s entirely accurate.
