<br>This is a sale that regularly produces massive prices for anything with proven form over hurdles or fences – and not many of these big purchases ever prove worth the money. Remember Garde Champetre at 530,000gns!

It looks as if the same combo have been in again today, as the Paul Webber trained 141 rated novice hurdler De Soto has just changed hands for 360,000gns, knocked down to Jonjo.

That’s for a horse that was 4th at Cheltenham and a well beaten 5th behind Blythe Spirit at Aintree. Even if he wins the 2008 Arkle and 2009 Champion Chase, he won’t cover that price.

Obviously the mega rich can afford such sums without a blink, but it does leave me wondering how they got so rich in the first place, given this attitude to value for money.

At the opposite end of the scale, I’ll be watching the progress of Pronce Vector with great interest. He was available to anybody for a £6k claim after he flopped in a Wolverhampton seller last time he ran, but Alison Thorpe paid 10,000gns for him yesterday. Can she work her magic with another horse apparently in permanent decline?
