Going to Donny Saturday evening for what is,basically,a run of the mill meeting.
Looking to book on the internet and I couldn’t believe the difference in price between the two days.Friday the County enclosure is £22 and grandstand £14.Most meetings, exceptions St Leger etc, are this price but Saturday sees an increase of £8.Racing is expensive enough without this kind of exploitation.
Apparently an ageing, baggy trouser wearing,pork-pie hat wearing beat combo are playing a "gig" immediately after racing. Since the meeting finishes at 9.40 Mrs HP wishes to depart immediately for her Saturday evening alcohol intake and takeaway.
I enjoyed Madness 30 years ago and would have willingly paid the extra but this time around the choice would have been nice.Racing is expensive enough without this kind of exploitation. It suggs
(i’ll get my coat)One other complaint. If I prepurchase the tickets online there is a saving of £2 per ticket to be had. All well and good until I realised there is an admin fee of £3.95, a grand saving of a a shilling.
June 24, 2008 at 09:40 #169914Apparently there are 20’000 expected at Donny for Madness. The Silver Ring is shut to accomodate the stage and the track should do quite well out of it.
Doncaster seem to be racing very frequently though (5 meetings since the start of May) and I think this will hurt their attendances in the longer term; especially with their pricing policy.
A few weekends back (Saturday 31st May) there was racing at York, Doncaster and Haydock on the same day. Now that’s Madness.

Would you like to explain your username?

June 24, 2008 at 10:25 #169920I think Donny has clashed with York twice this season. That’s an embarrassment for the race planners and needs looking at.
It took me a long time to persuade my girl to come racing and now she really enjoys it. The continuing gripe she has is the cost, primarily the entrance fee. She is becoming wise to what constitutes a better class meeting, she enjoys Charlie Hall day at Wetherby, but to pay some of the prices for lower class meetings it must be love that gets her to go.
June 24, 2008 at 10:30 #169921Thanks Seabird.
Posted once before, sometime ago, re Midway Lady and,Cheltenham aside, enjoy the mature debate on here.
The username is my nickname for my stepson. I wish I could give some amusing reason but it’s that simple.
June 24, 2008 at 11:51 #169928Thanks for the explanation anyway!

June 24, 2008 at 12:29 #169932It’s a Grey Day when this kind of Embarrassment happens…………..so says My Girl, anyway.
I’ve told her to Shut Up.
June 24, 2008 at 18:29 #169972If she enjoys Charlie Hall day then she has very good taste in racing.
I agree about Donny, prices are so scandalous for what the quality will be like.
I still prefer old Doncaster and i really miss the Mallard bar, such a lovely place to have a quiet drink and a decent sandwhich.
June 24, 2008 at 18:36 #169975welcome to the house of fun

So do I, the prices at the new bars are one step beyond.
June 24, 2008 at 23:17 #170007£22 to get into Tatts for a run-of-the-mill meeting is insane.
How many Arc day admissions at Longchamp would you get for that amount of money?
June 25, 2008 at 11:20 #170028I’ve posted on this very topic before. Doncaster continues to provide so-so racing at a more than premium price anyway before you start adding in unwanted extras like Suggs and his band of merry men.
If it was just the racing I might just tolerate it but the new styand, as magnificent as it may look, just doesn’t seem to have been designed with the racing public in mind.
Last year’s St. Leger was an appalling experience and several of my party vowed never to return. I couldn’t believe the racecourse managment spending the following week patting themselves on the back on claiming a great success in the media.
Chickens may be coming home to roost though. I notice they’ve started sending out email reminders for St Leger badges. They should be sold out by now. Perhaps the paying public have started to wise up.
End of rant.

June 25, 2008 at 18:45 #170091I went to the opening day last August of Donny and the quality of racing for £20 was very good as it could of easily been a Saturday card.
Thankfully i avoided the Leger as i knew it would be full to the rafters and went to Chester and it was so easy to move about as about 10-15,000 turned up as opposed to 30,000 plus that they get in high summer.
Anyway why go to the Leger when the biggest meeting of the season at Donny is the Great Yorkshire Chase.
June 28, 2008 at 10:44 #170484Notwithstanding the above issues on price at Doncaster, they’ve built a temporary stage for Madness down by the old stand. Upshot of this is that from the main grandstand you can only see the last two furlongs of the straight. The rest of it is obscured and you can’t see a thing.
So if you go to Doncaster for the racing tonight, not only are you paying a premium for music you don’t want, you’re getting a lower quality racing experience than you normally would.
