With a view to the top Premiership goalscorer. I know it is easy to get carried with major tournament performances – Baros springs to mind – but he did look pretty impressive and not someone who will particularly need to be brought along slowly. At 66/1 I think bookmakers are gambling that he isn’t going to get many starts.
Given Sir Alex’s, (and seemingly all of England apart from Mr Capello) preference for playing Rooney as a sole striker, I dont think the bookies envisage Hernandez leading the line much.
Having said that, he looks like he could be a really useful ‘impact player’ (not sure I like that term, but it beats ‘supersub’!). Quick, skillfull, small – Premiership centre-halves wont fancy seeing him coming on after 70 minutes.
I think it was Bruce Millington who made the point (I am guessing others might have suggested similar) that Rooney as sole striker came about more by accident than design due to the fact Fergie couldn’t trust Berbatov or Owen.
There must be a fear that Rooney will not be able to repeat last year’s golden season. I would agree that the likelihood is that Hernandez will start the season from the bench but it will not be that much of a surprise if he forces his way into the team.
