Browne’s Gazette died after running through the outside rail near the 12F flat start during the Fighting Fifth – he’d suffered a heart attack.

At the time, there was much sympathy for his rider, Mr Dermot Browne.

    AP

Wasn’t he involved in a dodgy ride on that horse? (a long time ago I think)

Not a lot gets past you DJ!

Decoupage was incredibly talented, scarily so. He was a tool.

Decoupage’s novice chase season was the year I first got into racing. He was pretty awesome when he won the Henry VIII at Sandown.

Barbaro and Valiramix also Jair Du Cochet as mensioned before, don’t think the horse ever got the credit he deserved
Teofilo another mensioned, was such a shame
Manduro yes, but he, like Teofilo are still lucky enough to be here and did get more of a chance to prove themselves, but Manduro certainly a better horse than Teofilo, at least we still have them for stud, will be interesting to see what happens with that

Several people mentioned Golden Cygnet on this thread and they might like to watch the finish of his Cheltenham win on Youtube – just stick his name in the search box.

Re Ten Pus : Fulke Walwyn’s fine chaser would (in my oinion) have defeated Desert Orchid in the ‘ 89 Gold Cup had he not fallen three out when leading.

Noddy’s Ryde (2m chaser) trained by Gordon Richards was another who had great potential.. Broke his off hind in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter (same race in which Best Mate died).

As has already been mentioned French Holly is the one that stands out. Second only to Istabraq as a two-mile hurdler, when everything about him suggested a three-mile chaser. Sadly murdered by Andrew Thornton.

Yes, how different that era might have been if Ten Plus hadn’t fallen…..as Hugh McIlvanney wrote ‘Ten Plus might well have won had he stood up, for he had to be expected to gallop relentlessly to the line, to be less readily broken than Yahoo’…..

I agree with Teofilio being such a shame. (Almost unbelievable that Jim Bolger could have one just as good so quickly)

What about A O’Brien’s Johannesburg? Unbeaten as a 2 yr old (?) and winning the 2001 Breeders Cup Juvenile on dirt….only to be like a handicapper the following sason – they even tried sprinting to no avail.

    Guess they aren’t machines.

At the start of this thread The Grey Bomber is mentioned.

He was AP fav. for the Triumph Hurdle and was killed in one of the most bizarre ways I can ever remember.

Unless my mind is wandering he stepped on a live electrical cable from a weather damaged pylon

There is an entry in the "Memorials" section of this form on behalf of the brilliant American filly Ruffian.
You could also also add Go For Wand and Landaluce to any list of wonderful US fillies who were taken early.

    Someone mentioned Precocious.
He broke a bone in his leg and eventually came back but was not the same.

Brings back memories for me of Wing and a Prayer.  Not sure he’d have been a superstar but won a lot of races as a juvenile hurdler.  Beautiful looking horse as well, I think he might have been an entire.  Only had one race in his next season which he admittedly only won because a certain Desert Orchid fell at the last (if my memory serves me right) and was found dead in his box the next morning.Do agree that Jair du Cochet was lost too soon.  Saw him race a few times and he was an amazing athlete of a horse.
