“El gran senor the best guineas winner in history for me.”

I take it you’ve never heard of Frankel.

El Gran Senor won the best 2,000 Guineas since Brigadier Gerard beat Mill Reef and My Swallow and I was lucky enough to be there.

Frankel didn’t beat anything of the quality of that duo or Chief Singer, Lear Fan, Rainbow Quest (or even arguably Keen).

But that doesn’t alter the fact Frankel won half the track and was better than any of them.

    In my opinion.

El Gran Senor put up the best performance in the 2,000 Guineas I’ve ever seen. But he wasn’t the best winner of the race.

I don’t think the bare result – superb though it was – even told the whole story.

To my eyes, El Gran Senor, a lazy colt, quickened to cut down Lear Fan, then quickened a second time to repel Chief Singer and, if anything, was back on the bit at the line.

That horse never did more than the bare minimum – he was even lazier than me.

But, no, he wasn’t as great as Frankel.

The manner in which Frankel won the Guineas still astounds me now it is one of the few races I often watch over and over again.

Sorry guys will have to agree to disagree. Egs beat a phenomenal field. Who was second to Frankel.

Who was second to Frankel, half the Rowley mile.

If El Gran Senor had remained at a mile/10 furlongs he’d have remained unbeaten, but he had an ambitious owner who was willing to risk defeat in search of the big prize

El Gran Senor did subsequently win the Irish Derby, but I’d agree his best form by far was at a mile.

But would Lester “missing me?” Piggott have won on the colt at Epsom?

Piggott waited, waited, and then waited some more, before producing Sir Ivor late and fast to win his Derby.

Did Pat Eddery’s ride in 1984 simply not match up to Piggott’s ride in 1968?

Serpentine in the Q22 at Eagle Farm this weekend , drawn 4 should give him a chance to get the rails and lead without too much work . Decent prize and he is in good form , battles hard to line . Numarian and few other ex Euros in form and tough opponents .
Southern France in the Brisbane Cup over two miles but he is nowhere near the horse he was in 2018 2019 in Europe . Must be showing something at home because his form does not justify the fees at moment

Tough gritty win from the front today by Serpentine at Randwick fresh up over 2000 , fought back hard to win nearly a length .

Serpentine , off the deck again today at Randwick in Neville Selwood Stakes , was headed and well inside the final furlong off the deck and won going away , that horse has massive ticker .

Great to see Serpentine winning again. Will always come with a big asterisk by his name in the record books for me, a Derby run at the start of July where the flat season only started in June is one to be taken with a pinch of salt. Hard to believe all that was happening 4 years ago now.

Serpentine’s Derby year was just all around top to bottom bizarre – run in July, the 25-1 winner completely ignored by everyone else and allowed to go off miles in front and never came back.

The runner up (Khalifa Sat) was 50-1 and ran only once afterwards, beating just one home in the Gordon Stakes.

The 3rd (Amhran Na Bhfiann) was 66-1 and was beaten in a maiden next time out and was 2 of 9 in his remaining career starts.

4th was Kameko (the 2000g winner) who was given far too much to do on the day and didn’t actually stay anyway, he went back to 8F for 3 of his last 4 races and only made the frame once when winning the G2 Joel Stakes.

The 5th (English King) ran in 5 subsequent races (3 of which were in Australia) but the closest he got to troubling the judge was a 4th in aforementioned the Gordon Stakes.

The two bright spots ended up being the 6th placed Mogul who followed up by winning that Gordon Stakes and then stepping up to win the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and Hong Kong Vase – Pyledriver finshed 11th but went on to win that years Great Voltiguer and finishing 3rd in the St Leger but he really came into his own as an older horse in winning the Hardwick Stakes, Coronation Cup & King George (beating the Arc winner) – he was also placed in another Coronation Cup and Hong Kong Vase.

All that is to say that the 2020 Derby for me will be remembered first and foremost for its unusual set of circumstance leading up to its running and the complete misjudgement of 15 other jockeys in allowing an Aidan horse (even an outsider) the best part of a 15L lead rather than the race being won by an above average horse…..with the best will in the world even in Australia he is at best a G3 horse (1 win and two places at that level down under).

A few out of that Derby ended up in OZ .
English King had 8 runs down under , 2nd in handicap best effort , now retired .
Emissary came down with him to Moroney stable , he’s done ok , a couple wins , a few runs in the top handicaps . Was lame after Spring prep but still shown registered as spelling .
Worthily had a win and trialed the other day .
Mohican Heights , a couple of wins , now in training up at Fannie Bay , Darwin way up North .
