Newbury’s a dump.
I recently went to the new Ascot and really quite liked it. I did pay a bit more so you could watch from the stand but it was worth it. The parade ring is immense. As is the stand. It’s 2009 after all.
January 11, 2009 at 20:33 #203251Since they allowed drinks too be brought onto the front of the track and by the paddock Doncaster has turned into a bloody pub. The atmosphere at the St Leger was ****, lots of pissed up twats.
January 11, 2009 at 21:11 #203260I miss the old Doncaster as it had character and loved doing the walk from the Stand to the old winners enclosure if i backed the winner so i could give it a cheer.
All being well i hope to be their on Great Yorkshire Chase day which is one the best days out in the jumping season.
I was quite amazed at the small crowd when i went to Diamond Day at Newbury as it is such an easy course to reach from Central London but maybe the toffs and snobs where still being decleansed after having to travel oop north to the cloth cap and whippet brigade for their precious Royal Meeting.
January 11, 2009 at 22:08 #203276It took us ages too get rid of all the champagne you lot guzzled at the Royal Meeting.
Most of the southerners cam up for the day and didnt stay over. One factor in the small ground ot Diomond day was the the fact that the rail transport system that links the town with the main line was out of action, i went too Newbury that summer and it was chaos getting on the replacement buses.
Whent they ran the QEII meeting at Newmarket they refuses too let the newmarket badge holders in without paying, hence why it was like a quiet saturday at Thirsk than a group one day/
January 11, 2009 at 23:58 #203302I remember that, how pathetic and if you want to market your racecourse and its races then that was not the way to do it.
Newbury Members were allowed in on King George day yet Newmarket which is known as the HQ of racing were shafted.
The rail network on the Saturday was fine as it was the only day i was going to but i could not believe that on a Sunday which normally gets lots of families in attendance could only be got to by a Bus from Reading.
January 12, 2009 at 01:18 #203323Newbury Members were allowed in on King George day.
I don’t think that is true Neil.
Most Newbury members stayed away because I understand they had to pay. Which was why there was such a small turn out.

Value Is EverythingJanuary 12, 2009 at 02:03 #203334I don’t think they were either – the Ascot executive literally moved in and ran the meeting.
The traffic situation has never been so well organised than with Ascot running it, it was impressive.
January 13, 2009 at 19:33 #203678I have a dilemma:
Last year I paid £160 for 30 race days at Newbury Racecourse in the Grandstand (tattersalls) enclosure. With no reciprocals. Worked out at £5.33 per day. This year they are not doing the Grandstand membership.
So do I:
A/. Pay £290 for full membership. 30 days at Newbury plus about 6 reciprocals I’d go to. Working out at £8.06 per day (including recips).
B/. Pay £140 for Jumps only membership. 12 days plus (presumably) 6 recips. £7.78 per day.
C/. Pay £210 for Flat only membership. 18 days plus (presumably) 6 recips. £8.75 per day.
D/. Pay £189 for Weekends and Evenings. 15 days (presumably) 6 recips. £9 per day.
E/. Tell them where to go. Pay £0 up front. And choose which days to go in to tattersalls. (I could go to 18 days racing for just under £290 or just do 10 meetings for around £180). Would I be cutting off my nose….?
Thing is, I love going racing, not for the socialising, not particularly to bet either, just for the racing. But having paid out £282 for Goodwood, can I justify another £290 or whatever for Newbury?
What do you think?
( for anyone interested there is also a 18 -25 year olds membership available for £90)

newbury did of course stage diamond day for one year but half the usual diamond day crowd couldnt face going there.I would suspect half the Ascot crowd feel the same with the new stand/layout.
Its a recurring theme but nothing baffles me more than the nostalgia for the dismal old Ascot grandstand and the tunnel to the parade ring. It was bloody awful
Since the viewing has been rectified, the new facilities are excellent

Does that include Tattersalls as well?
Was told, in that tall "stand" in Tattersalls, you can stand on the ground and see the roof, just empty space. With no stands as such. Had to watch the racing from the inadequate steps outside. What a waste of space / viewing area.
Has that changed?

Not quite sure what you mean by ‘new facilities’ but the viewing is still awful from ground level, if you want to go up to sit in the upper level, you have to fight your way through hoardes(on occasion) of people standing around the betting and bar areas to try and get outside in the first place, at big meetings you are lucky to get a seat as people now tend to ‘camp’ there from before the first race and send runners to top up drinks/place bets; if it is raining, you get soaked, then try and fight your way back downstairs(escalatars) to try and get out to the pre parade ring, or the parade ring which looks like it is surrounded by architecture and decor from a NCP carpark; all the steps round the paddock are extremely unkind to anyone who has difficulty walking; the food and drink are over priced and ridiculously small and one of the ‘big screens’ has such a bad time delay the commentator is telling you a horse have fallen before it’s reached the fence, and the entry prices are on a par with Newbury for taking the mick.
January 19, 2009 at 22:42 #205185This thread title should now be changed to Wonderful news about Newbury membership. Within the last week Newbury racecourse have reconsidered, and are now doing a Grandstand Membership for 2009 at £170 .
Saving me £120
Thankyou Newbury Racecourse.
