I wonder if JP s considering sending him to Ben Haslams ? , seriously it’s a shame to see , have they done his wind ?
January 15, 2022 at 14:19 #1578171Agree HDLG. Very sad to see him trail in last against horses he would have beaten in his prime.
January 15, 2022 at 14:31 #1578176I don’t dispute the use of the word “prime” – as his best days are clearly behind him – yet this horse is still only a 9yo.
Tells its own story.

January 15, 2022 at 15:03 #1578189Worth remembering they ‘lost’ him a bit in his first season after winning the Triumph which isn’t unusual for juvenile hurdlers going into open company but still. Had his wind done in June. Maybe they thought that was the issue but could be something else entirely? Something else physically wrong
He is only 9 but had a very busy juvenile campaign as I recall and I think the same for his novice chase season. Sad to see but a reminder that the true greats are so great as they can stay at that high level for so long.January 15, 2022 at 15:41 #1578205For me he looks like he has finally fallen out of love with chasing (he was never what I would call a natural chaser as he had his own way of jumping). Also this was his 25th run under rules, the year he won the Triumph Hurdle he had a campaign of 7 races so he has had a lot of miles on his clock early in his career.
With all that being the case, I would now look to give him a run over hurdles somewhere in the hope that it might spark something within him but if you get the same lackluster effort again well then I think its time to call it a day.
Nobody wants to see him continuing to run in races trailing in a distance behind, its not fair on him especially with what he has done in the past.

February 9, 2022 at 13:42 #1582214February 9, 2022 at 14:48 #1582235Good decision as the last few runs have been sad to watch.
Being a seven time grade 1 winner is pretty special, hope he enjoys a well deserved rest.
February 9, 2022 at 15:04 #1582238The right decision. Whether injury/enthusiasm – he wasn’t the same horse. 7 Gd1 wins is pretty impressive – though only £600k in prize money. Win 7 Gp1 races on the flat and you’re raking in probably double that. Shows you the paucity of NH prize money.
February 9, 2022 at 17:39 #1582261It’s easy to forget how good Defi Du Seuil was following his prolonged loss of form. Not many horses hit such heights over both hurdles and fences, and he was without doubt a very talented performer on his day. Wishing him a long and happy retirement.
February 9, 2022 at 17:50 #1582262They e done right by him, he just wasn’t in the game anymore. Hope he has a long happy retirement playing in his field
