    What a wonderful bit of journalism in the Racing Post (online version) from David about his fight with prostate cancer.
    I wish him well and hope he recovers to live a long and fruitful life.
    Take his advice if you are over 50.

    Agreed – a moving, poignant, yet often hilarious piece shot through with precisely no self-pity or anger whatsoever (when exhibition of any such would have been perfectly understandable). The line;

    "They send me to Hereford Hospital and put me in a ward for people who can’t breathe (I think I glimpsed Trotsky)"

    had me roaring with laughter.

    Alastair Down gave him a special award at the Lord Derby lunch today. Al gave a very moving and excellent tribute and then David Ashforth came up on stage to a standing ovation from the 600+ media and connections there. He gave a lovely, funny and self deprecating speech. It was the highlight of the afternoon.

    I hear Dr Ashforth is going to make another attempt to grab a grand this xmas.

    I’m sure we all remember the glorious day he achieved the title ‘bookie basher’ getting stuck in to the mighty Cetti’s Warbler each-way at 100s.

    Looking back at that race in the official form book is like travelling to a bygone age. Happier times, when bookies bet to an SP of 106% on a 12-runner Towcester novice hurdle with a 2/17 fav!

    Is it too much to ask for the on-course books to help the great man in his attempt at an ecore this year?

    Time for on-course layers to show some christmas spirit and bet to 0.5% a runner on the most uncompetitive heat of the week. It’s for charity.
