<br>      I tuned into ATR on Saturday evening to view the last two races at Wolverhampton .  Dave Compton was the presenter with the assistance of Barry Faulkner .

I was so struck by the poor , lacklustre presentation of  <br>Mr .Compton that I  e – mailed the programme as follows :

"  Mr Compton ,<br>                        As always you are mumbling and dropping <br>   your voice .  Most of the time I can ‘ t understand what  <br>   you are talking about .

As regards the 9. 00 at Wolverhampton you were talking about football odds as the race was about to go <br>off . <br>      Aren ‘  t you supposed to talk about the race .  You never discussed the horses in the race.

You were talking about UK withdrawals when the horses left the stalls in a race at Delaware .

I cannot believe any novice would develop an interest in racing by listening to you .  You make it sound so dull . <br>Are you actually interested in racing ? <br> <br>    Please attempt to speak clearly and coherently .  "

I was surprised to hear him read out the e – mail . He said that , yes , racing was dull , that there was always another racing channel to watch [ RUK ? ]  and that he would try to do better [ as regards the mumbling etc ] .

I consider Mr Compton to be the poorest presenter on the two racing specialist programmes .  I believe he does not discuss the horses before races because that would <br>involve doing some form research . Admittedly evening racing at Wolverhampton  is low – grade fare but there are <br>other presenters who could inject some vitality into the <br>proceedings .  Not only was he not interested in Wolverhampton but he was not interested in the American <br>racing . If he is not interested in the racing why should the viewers ?

Actually , after the e – mail was read out both he and his colleague noticeably spoke more clearly and with a bit more zest .

It’s all a question of taste, I suppose, but DC is probably the best presenter of this stuff on the box.

Has the ability to make a discussion of say, optimum leek growing conditions, interesting, humourous and relevant.

Nice digressions, a keen wit, and you have already demonstrated his willingness to include the audience, as part of your communication this evening.

As jobs go, his is a good one, but I doubt even a crack-happy equine enthusiast paid ten grand a week could summon up much enthusiasm for racing at Wolverrandom, I should cocoa.

    Just balancing the viewpoint, sah.

Dave Compton is one of the best and most natural presenters in racing. What do you want? The stylised freaks who speak in a way no normal person would, with lots of EMPHASIS on words CHOSEN at random? Is that what you think of as professionalism?<br>My only objection to him is that he talks too much about bloody football. (Come on Dave, admit it. You know it’s true).

I’m sure that Compton is a thoroughly nice bloke and he certainly appears to know his stuff but, to back up what bimble said, his voice is just incredibly boring. That dreary monotone never fails to have me nodding off; if only he could inject a little more panache into his delivery (without going into the appalling histrionics Zorro mentions), he’d be near the top of the tree, as far as television pundits go.

Mind you, that’s not saying much.

I think he’s fine. You can’t change your delivery; it’s got to be natural and if that’s how he naturally speaks….then there’s nothing he can do about it! <br>He’s far easier on the ear than the likes of Thommo, Big Mac and Matt Chapman!

I’ve always thought Compton was the best of their presenters, especially when he’s in the betting broom cupboard thing (bring back Gordon the Gopher).

………doesn’t he share a flat with Matt Chapman?

    That could explain all!

Compton, Chapman and Boyce should consider a move to another racing channel.  They are too good for ATR.<br>I watched my tapes of Royal Ascot for the first time last week.  I was on holiday during the meeting.<br>The coverage was diabolical.<br>"Let’s whizz off for some ads while they are loading" … ADS???  Puleeze :(<br>ATR’s coverage was befitting that of a hunter meet at Hexham.  Utter trash.<br>The above named presenters are unappreciated in their time.  They will always be associated with the sub-standard coverage they have to front.<br>

The hunter meet isn’t trash, it’s the ATR coverage I speak of ;)<br>

<br>What, so Chapman et al speak like that all the time, do they?

Compo could just try to sound a little more interested in what he’s doing; that would engage viewers more than his deadpan delivery does at the moment.

Sorry if I’m pointing out the obvious but he did come on and say his microphone wasn’t working

No Chapman et al DON’T speak like that all the time, that’s the problem with them! Their delivery is not natural at all, it’s put on for the cameras, maybe with the exception of Boy Band who probably is that manic all the time!

Deadpan is fine by me. He’s still got a sense of humour.

Does it really matter how they speak as long as racing is shown – my personal favourites on atr are matt doyle because despite a low drawly voice always has something interesting to say via the form book – also robert cooper for his quirky style (especially his interview techniques) can be hilarious sometimes…

I used to enjoy Bloaty a lot on ATR.  Whilst he’s starting to be a little predictable now, he’s still a good watch.  Better than Pitman and Harvey any day.

Matt Doyle and Jason Weaver are always good to listen to tip-wise I find.

I ave to agree with RD! How anyone can criticise Compo when we’ve got Pitman and Harvey to put up with, I don’t know!

I find the originator of this thread to be very much spot on with his assessment of compo.

I find it strange that any horse racing fans would find it acceptable for anyone to regularly hand over to the commentator after they have run half a furlong, if something is left or slowly away we would be none the wiser unless we had spotted it ourselves.

As for Chapman, he shouldn’t be allowed near a microphone.<br>
