Very impressive by Economics and he will be in his element at galloping tracks going forward. My thought post race was he wouldn’t handle Epsom, but William Haggas was well ahead of me on that one as he has already been pulled out of The Derby.
May 16, 2024 at 15:56 #1694502Would be interesting to see Economics go to the Curragh and possibly take on whoever wins at Epsom.
He was mightily impressive today, and still looked quite green.
May 16, 2024 at 16:14 #1694508Easy to forget how much improvement can come from any type, may as well not look at 2 year old form at all. Classic trials et al have been wild so far, add the Frenchies to that.
May 16, 2024 at 16:17 #1694510Ancient Wisdom really poor. As soon as Buick couldn’t get him out in front he looked in trouble, and the jock seemed to accept he wasn’t going to win very early. So much of the 2yo form doesn’t seem to be working out.
Not sure what to make of the winner. With the favourite looking a shadow of last year, he probably hasn’t beaten much. He made them look very slow.
May 16, 2024 at 16:23 #1694514Impressive Economics, but only his second time on a racecourse.
Doesn’t have much experience for an Epsom Derby..
Big horse, not sure to act at Epsom.
Not sure to stay 12f.
Probably the right decision not to go for the Derby.Value Is EverythingMay 16, 2024 at 16:23 #1694515Can fully understand connections not wanting to subject him to the undulations at Epsom – the open galloping nature of the Curragh for the Irish Derby is the obvious best option for him. If he stayed, the St Leger would also be a suitable race for him.
Ancient Wisdom for the life of me I couldn’t see handling Epsom with that action (noticeable him changing his legs several times up the straight) and even if the weather helped them and it was a soft ground Derby coming down the Hill is going to be an issue.
Overall, the Derby picture is still rather wide open but Ambiente Friendly has ticked most of the boxes (trip/undulations/performance etc) and is still available at 8s.
May 16, 2024 at 16:36 #1694519Maureen Haggas was interviewed on RTV and said she is not convinced he is a 12 furlong horse. If William Haggas is of the same opinion, it has to be doubtful if he will go to The Curragh.
Maybe he is an Eclipse and International horse.
May 16, 2024 at 16:44 #1694520Yes, they are not going swerve Epsom in favour of a stiffer test of stamina.
Not sure he is experienced enough, or good enough for a race like the Eclipse. I assume he isn’t in the French Derby, but can you supplement for that race?
May 16, 2024 at 17:26 #1694522the French Derby is the day after Epsom, I’d imagine looking how babyish he was still today that both of them come too soon in 16 days time. Where they do go who knows. Ascot would buy them more time but then that is very close to the Eclipse too. He was very impressive.
May 16, 2024 at 19:02 #1694529His half sister (by miler Dawn Approach) won a bumper over 2m and the dam herself won 2 G2’s over 12.5F and was runner up in a G2 over 16F – he didn’t look to be stopping at the end of today’s 10.5F and that was despite not settling very well early on.
If they can get him to settle a bit better I really don’t see the trip being an issue – maybe a trip to Royal Ascot will be next, if they are brave it will be the 12F King Edward VII to test his stamina but if they are that worried there is always the Hampton Court Stakes which is over 10F.
For me I would go 12F because you can always drop back to 10F if it doesn’t work out, although the 10F division could be quite a tough one this season.
May 16, 2024 at 19:58 #1694532I know it’s not been a long career, but does anyone know how many winners Night Of Thunder has sired over 1m4f and beyond?
May 16, 2024 at 20:31 #1694538If I thought he’d stay 12f (or just wanted to try) I’d go for the Irish Derby. Curragh would suit him perfectly.
May 16, 2024 at 22:35 #1694552He is now favourite for the Irish Derby.
