Mentioning new commentators I heard Gareth Topham the day day from Catterick and boy is he boring with a very dull voice.
Just been watching the Uttoxeter coverage from New Year’s Eve and I must confess I thought Gareth Topham was very good.
I didn’t find him remotely "boring with a very dull voice". His voice reminds me of a slightly less frenetic Lee McKenzie.
He’s doing a good job and has certainly earned his success, having put in a lot of hard work over the years in point-to-point commentaries etc.
January 5, 2013 at 16:45 #425403Just be grateful it wasn’t the cheery Martin Harris at Catterick. He’s been the standing (cold) dish there for years.
I thought Martin Harris did a very good job today at Chepstow.
By the way what has happened to Lee McKenzie? Don’t remember hearing him at all in 2012

Coincidentally Lee was MC’ing at Chepstow today.
Lee didn’t commentate in 2012 as he was working for the Olympic Broadcasting Service and had other broadcast commitments.
Lee is also concentrating on broadcasting work this year, he provides commentary for BBC Regions and local radio. He still commentates in the Channel Islands. He is also MC at Goodwood, Cheltenham and other courses, so his voice is still heard on course. I also believe he called the "human" races at Musselburgh on New Years Day
January 5, 2013 at 23:30 #425458Lee McKenzie was indeed calling the New Year Sprint at Musselburgh last Tuesday and did a solid job. Handicap races for humans aren’t that easy to call given that the runners start spread out and then close up, but Lee made a pretty decent fist of it. He also did a bit of work with Derek Thompson on race analysis before the meeting.
