The sheer size of their squad should help too. There is no doubt they could climb out of the second tier and arguably shouldn’t be there at all. But they weren’t that impressive against a neat but (to be honest) toothless Worcester last week and I suspect the Donald/Giles revolution to take a game or two to get going. I think it’ll be a close battle but the weather is sure to take a hand.
12:00 Start delayed due to rain. C’mon you rainclouds!
April 23, 2008 at 19:55 #159489Nice 77 from Trescothick today but 238 looks below par for Somerset. Meanwhile, Northants survived a sticky start and were only six down at the close. Heavy rain forecast for tomorrow.
April 23, 2008 at 21:15 #159518After starting this thread complaining about the rain affecting the first week of the county season i find myself thinking it could be the only thing that save Somerset from a thumping
. If Lancashire get a big first innings lead and there’s not much to suggest otherwise then the heavy rain Andrew says is on the way will be fine, but id much prefer it if somerset could make a fight out of this match get some early wickets tomorrow.Charles Darwin to conquer the World
April 23, 2008 at 21:37 #159529Could be overcast in the morning so there is a chance. And though it looks slightly ominous, you never really know what a pitch is like until both teams have batted.
April 24, 2008 at 20:22 #159737What a difference a day makes, Somerset back on course, sky sports news showed some of the wickets and it looks a bit tricky for batting what with the overcast conditions and an uneven bounce, and if the track gets worse over the next couple of days and the weather stays the same then Somerset might have an advantage bowling last, depending of course if they can post a decent second innings total.

April 24, 2008 at 20:59 #159742Great effort by Somerset today, game on with two days to go.
April 25, 2008 at 00:34 #159763Good to see my boys off to a good start.

As long as the likes of Hoggard, Bresnan and Rashid continue to play for Yorkshire and avoid International call-ups, then we’ve a cracking chance of racking up some good early points in the Championship table.
Great start from Hoggie today and a reminder he hasn’t given up his chances of an England place just yet.
April 25, 2008 at 20:51 #159883If Hoggard isn’t playing at Lords on 15th May then I will assume one of two things has happened – either he is injured or the selectors have completely lost their grip on reality. It was a disgrace that he was dropped in the first place.
The County Championship is open. I think there are three teams; Sussex, Durham and Lancs who are a notch better than the rest, but they are by no means an elite and I would put Yorkshire in a trio with Surrey and Somerset as the chasing bunch who could spring a surprise.
I think Notts will struggle long term, as will Hants and Kent are having a nightmare start.
April 25, 2008 at 22:13 #159898The rain arrived at Manchester then, draw looks on the cards now unless Langer decides to up tempo and try and give Lancashire a run chase. That happened a few times last season i think it’s an Aussie thing, Somerset captains in the past would almost always settle for a draw in this situation but Langer is a very positive skipper, it will probably rain again though
anyway.Matthew Hoggard is just too good not to be playing International cricket, why on earth he was dropped is beyond me, I have’nt followed the fortunes of the national side as closely as i would of liked of late but this guy will cause havoc to a lot of county batting sides just like Hampshires today. If England dont recall Hoggard it will be Yorkshires gain.

April 26, 2008 at 17:17 #160083Langer did’nt fancy taking it on then, just the batting practise and my stake money back.did you back the draw Andrew? Yorkshire finished off Hampshire by an innings. A great performance by the Warwickshire batsmen, that must have been a cracking game to watch, at the start of the day i would of favoured a Northants win or a draw. In Divison Two Derby knocked off 266 inside 60 overs to beat Essex, after Essex had notched 234-2 declared off 31 overs.

April 26, 2008 at 18:30 #160090No I backed the draw at Northampton instead
But I knew I was in trouble when it didn’t rain at all on the second day despite the BBC forecast clearly indicating two big fat drops of rain and a big black cloud. Nevermind.Honours even at Lancashire and this performance shows that Somerset can mix it with the top teams in Division One, all without Caddick too. Starting to have slight concerns about Lancashire’s bowling though.
April 27, 2008 at 21:00 #160269Who writes the cricket reports for sky text and bbc, is it the same person?
sky text headline – Worcs thwarted, read on – Rain frustrates Worcestershirebbc text – Mitchell shines at murkey New Road, read on – rain denies Worcestershire bid of first win in FP.
umm
worcester batting 158 – 8 off 39 overs hardly record breaking stuff, Mitchell the only batter to pass 23 runs, was 48 not out but running out of partners. Duckworth and Lewis would of struggled to set Somerset any kind of target from that.I was really pleased to see that Matt Wood of Glamorgan hit an unbeaten 91, he was unlucky at Somerset and did’nt always get the chance he deserved, i hope that he can prove his worth for Glamorgan.

April 30, 2008 at 14:35 #160766i see Lancashire’s Brad Hodge has joined the IPL side Kolkata for 5 weeks, and as if Hampshire’s problems could’nt be any worse, i hear Dimitri Mascarenhas will be playing for Rajasthan. it seems to me the money these players earn for playing in the playboy IPL is more important then county cricket, ok Marcarenhas is the only English player involved but he quotes "England players are desperate to play in the IPL. Next year they will all put their hands up to come and play."
The ECB have denied centrally contracted players the chance to get involved with the IPL this season, but we dont see them in county cricket much now anyway, it’s another blow to county cricket another nail in the coffin. money wins over history it seems.

They’ve just signed one hell of a replacement though in the short term.
Mohammad Yousuf is some player and will go very well for them IMO.
Still happy with our start though and weather permitting, I can see us skittling out Notts pretty cheaply tomorrow for a 1st innings lead of over a hundred.

Yeah what a great replacement for Lancashire, im a little surprized that the IPL teams have’nt made a move for Yousuf.
It’s just come to my notice(i do walk around with my head in the clouds) that the friends provident group games are home and away, i dont know about anyone else but i liked this competition when it was a straight knockout, surely it would be better and fairer if the one day league was home and away instead, what does everyone else think

May 2, 2008 at 10:45 #161061The county chairmen couldn’t bear to lose the B&H Trophy and so inflicted group stages to what used to be the Gillette/Natwest Trophy. What gave it its charm was the knockout element and I agree, it should be reinstated, perhaps including all the minor counties again, maybe even some of the better club sides in the early stages, just like the FA Cup.
The Pro40 should be abandoned immediately, it is a pointless monstrosity tacked onto the end of the season for no reason other than to squeeze a few extra quid out of the cricket public.
And I say that even though Worcester won it last year.
May 2, 2008 at 21:25 #161210That was some achivement by Worcestershire last season to win the pro 40 considering they came bottom of the championship and New Road looked like a lake, i can remember they played one of there home games at Taunton.
I might not like the format of this F Provident but i think Somerset have made a solid start to it and would expect them to make the quaters, they chased down a useful total tonight, Bond only bowled 5 overs for Hampshire(maybe injured already).
