Interesting debate Rory. As I see it, every time the Scoop six pool becomes "interesting" (i.e there is a lot of dead money in the pool making teh jackpot attractive), that isn’t down to Findlay et al, it is down to the recreational punters who have played regardless of the fact that the bet has represented poor value in the previous weeks.

Yes, the syndicates may play and not win (and their money will help swell the pool in future weeks), but assuming that the syndicates are winners on balance, I don’t logically see how their presence does anything but hinder the recreational players.

I think I’m with Rory on this, I don’t think the big syndicate players do the scoop 6 any harm, because although they are likely to get a share of the odd big dividend, it’s my guess that it’s their money that has swelled the pool in the first place.

As for the placepot, I doubt if there’s many people in the country who have done more of them than me, that’s how much I get involved, and I’ve been doing them since day one, and often two or 3 at the same meeting.
I don’t think syndicates play the placepot, I just think that people have wised up, after all in the early days a 25/1 winner of a four horse race could see a placepot dividend of £2,000. That obviously wasn’t likely to go on forever, and now regular players have a lot more idea than they might have had in the early days.

As for the original question, yes I’ve made a few similar blunders in my time. Only last month my mate told me he had a tip for a horse, he couldn’t remember the name but he told me it was number 10 in the 4th race. When I spoke to him in the evening he asked me if I had backed it, and I said "yes unfortunately" it turns out the bloody thinh hacked up, but I had backed number 11.

    .

Exactly the opposite Ted. They won’t play until there is sufficient dead money in the pool. It isn’t a case of them doing the Scoop 6 any harm – they are perfectly entitled to play the bet as and when they want. However – let’s be clear – their existence lowers the expected payout for recreational punters, rather than increasing it.

I put £20 on Massini’s Maguire at last years festival. Unusually I used the Tote. Could not be bothered fighting through the crowd. Went to collect my money and found I had been given the wrong horse number. Ouch @ 25/1

Certain I asked for the right horse number but never bothered to check the ticket. My fault and an expensive lesson learnt.

    Arsington Sodmonster?!

Now there’s a great name for a horse, Jeremy! :D

Hihihihi, you’d have to shorten it to 18 characters first, though – Arsingtonsodmonsta, perhaps?

No idea what recess of my brain I dredged that one up from, but it struck me as the sort of curse Zoz or Zome might have invented. It has a “them” sort of feel to it.

The other curse I use a lot at present is “Leonard Parkin!!”, but that just confuses people.
