There’s a petition going around to stop donkey rides at my local Weston Super Mare beach.

I thought they already were. I remember them in my youth at Blackpool beach, but they no longer do them. I think obese children is to blame.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

The donkeys are local – not a long drive from the beach…

And with a workforce of 40 donkeys they are rotated – so given a rest – not working anything like every day.

Lovely memories of going to Weston as a child and having a go on the donkey rides…
I got a photo of my son I’ll post up later when I get home of him as a small boy on a donkey at Weston and the smile on his face is something that will be missed from lots of little children if it were to longer exist
Where is the petition to keep it.?? I’m sure they would or at least should get more signatures for that..

Me too, on a donkey called Rosie which was the highlight of a largely forgettable holiday in Clevedon during the summer of ’64. The memory of a mix of fear and fun remains vivid. The first and more than probably the last time I got the leg-up on an equid, though I had a spin on a camel in Egypt some 20 years later :-)

The donkey rides on Scarborough south beach are still going strong; no idea if there’s a petition to ban them as well

In Devon a couple of years ago I went to a donkey sanctuary near Exeter. A splendid place that I’d recommend TRFs south-western contingent visit

    Donkeys are charming, so-placid animals

    You are certainly right Drone.

I presume you visited The Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth?

Lovely video with a child being reunited with a donkey:

We used to go to Clevedon for our holidays. Seem to remember getting a train from Weston called The Yatton Special? I loved having donkey rides at the seaside: got a photo of me looking really worried as they were coming round for payment as my dad was taking the photo. Isn’t the current problem that they don’t want to fat shame the children that are too fat to be on the donkeys? Imo the more contact children have with animals the more they grow up caring about them. I know people have mixed feelings about zoos but I wonder if I’d feel so passionate about animal conservation if I hadn’t seen elephants and tigers in zoos. Standing at London Zoo with just a sheet of glass between me and the most beautiful tiger is something I’ll never forget.

That’s the place; a very impressive setup, and although I didn’t get quite so up close and personal as the girl in the video I did enjoy patting one and hearing an eeyore or two…nice :-)

We went there years ago after I’d read the Down Among the Donkeys written by the woman who founded it.

What does a donkey on Blackpool Beach get for lunch?

    About half an hour.
