Race of the weekend for me. And the contenders are:
Ace
The bridesmaid in 7 Gr1s to date where beaten less than 2 lengths at distances from 10f-12f (including 2nd to Shirocco in Breeders Cup Turf last October). Trainer quoted as saying that "he really does need fast ground" which he won’t get on Friday (I think) but he has run well on VrySft and Yld so might not be as big a problem as APO’B thinks!
Breeding
By Danehill who has had only 1 winner (North Light) from 15 runners at Epsom in Pattern races so the track may not suit either.
Enforcer & Notable Guest
Neither of these has the ability to win this race
Shirocco
Winner of 3 Gr1s and 1 Gr2 over the distance (including Breeders Cup Turf last Oct). Beaten twice at LON over 12f (including 4th in last years Arc). Prefers a bit of cut in the ground which he will probably get and looks the one to beat here.
Breeding
As far as I can see, he will be his sire’s first runner at the track in a Pattern race
Ouija Board
Impressive winner of her Oaks in 2004 and has gone on to take 3 more Gr1s at the distance. May prefer better ground but certainly has the ability and will handle the track so if Shirocco is not on a going day looks the one to be on.
Breeding
By Cape Cross who has an impressive 3 wins and 2 places from 10 Pattern Race runners at Epsom
Something Exciting
2nd in last years Oaks so should handle the track but probably doesn’t have the ability to win a race of this calibre
Summary
Shirocco looks to have everything in his favour to take his 4th Gr1 at 12f. Worth a bet at 2/1 or better.
Thoughts?

May 31, 2006 at 12:56 #72642Shirocco – I can’t see the ground being any faster than good and should be very difficult to beat.
May 31, 2006 at 13:49 #72643If it genuinely does ride good, Ace might turn in a good performance again but on anything with soft in the going, its difficult to look past shiroco. I think overall its actually a poor race.

May 31, 2006 at 13:53 #72644I truly hate this waste-of-space race. Every year, it has no more than five or six runners competing for a ridiculous Gp 1 status and prize money. It is usually won by Dettori and/or Godolphin and would be better replaced by a decent handicap…
May 31, 2006 at 18:04 #72645If the ground is good then I’m with Ouija Board. I think she is at her best over 1m 4f on good ground and at her best she is definatly good enough to beat Shirocco.
If ‘soft’ is in the going description then I think it will blunt her turn of foot and Shirocco will be tough to beat.
I really hope OB wins though because she really deserves another group 1 win after her unlucky defeat last time out.
June 1, 2006 at 15:21 #72646Poor race? Waste of space? Surprised by those comments… I think you’ve got two of the worlds best mile and a half horses on show, bar hurricance run who else would start favourite ahead of Shirocco? And why would you replace it with a handicap!!! Madness..
June 1, 2006 at 15:24 #72647I will have an each way punt on Ace.If he is ever going to win a European Group 1 it will be tomorrow-if not I think they will try and find and American race.
June 1, 2006 at 16:48 #72648I could be way off, but I suspect Ace is only running in this because Scorpion is injured; I think he would have been in the Tattersalls last weekend otherwise.
June 1, 2006 at 21:01 #72649Going is now Good (according to RP) so this could bring Ouija Board into it a bit more. Shirocco not really proven on anything better than Yld so the 10/3 (Bet365) about Ouija Board looks tempting.
June 1, 2006 at 21:09 #72650Ace looks to be getting a "Powerscourt campaign"…..where is the visor that rejuvenated him in the Breeders Cup? Looks like they are waiting for a bigger day.
June 1, 2006 at 21:27 #72651Quote: from trackside528 on 10:07 pm on June 1, 2006[br]Apparently Shirocco’s connections think he may handle quicker ground, and he was very impressive at newmarket lto, so i doubt ill even have a bet in this contest…
It looks a match to me and there’s no way I’d be taking odds-on about a horse unproven on the ground when 3/1 is freely available (10/3 with B365 now gone actually:o ) about a CD winner on her preferred surface.
June 1, 2006 at 21:37 #72652Ouija Board is an outstanding bet in this at that price. Lump on, bet of the season so far. (Seriously, do lump on!!!!)
June 1, 2006 at 21:44 #72653okay will do Corm? how much?
June 1, 2006 at 22:43 #72654Dont listen to Cormack15. Shirocco WILL win. ÂÂÂ
June 1, 2006 at 22:46 #72655Purely on RPR Ouija Board has a liitle to find with Shirocco. I’m with Shirocco as long as the ground doesn’t dry out.
Incidentally if you fancy Ouija Board I would back her for the Arc before she runs.
June 1, 2006 at 23:16 #72656Talk about a hyprocrit. The forecast dry night has caused me to change my mind and go for Ouija Board; i just think its too big a price. Shes run her best races over 12f on Gd and Gd/Fm ground.
I hope i don’t regret this.
June 2, 2006 at 00:52 #72657Ouija Board is a hold up horse who needs to come off a fast pace, and this wont be happening on Friday.
This race is shaping exactly like the Newmarket one that Shirocco won last time, small field with no front runners.
Perfect circumstances for the French raider.
Ouija Board is the lay of the year, the drying ground makes it even better because her price will shorten.
