Pub landlords don’t encourage outings anymore, they lose a lot of their customers for a day and have to pay someone to look after the pub if they go themselves.

My local pub used to organise a minibus to Cartmel. I would usually expect to have seen it advertised by now for the meeting at the end of May but I have not seen anything. Maybe it is an expense it has had to cut back on after it recovers from so many months with zero income.

I would have thought weatherspoons trips were in a dustcart

Like Drone thought 25 quid was reasonable enough this week at York but still early days in the cost of living crisis.
Will things pick up by the time of the Ebor meeting when it’s 40 quid every day in Tatts, also 40 quid for the pleasure of seeing Madness & The Sugababes on other days.

Would not entertain any track like Chester that rips off customers with Chesterbet.

Pleased to say I was wrong about my local. Just seen a large coach outside it. When I asked someone who was about to board it where they were going, she replied “Bangor On Dee races.”

The coach looked full. Hope they avoid Chesterbet, also used at Bangor.

Betting ring rumour that Lingfield are going behind closed doors for all midweek afternoon meetings.

Not enough racegoer revenue to cover staff costs.

I wonder if it is a legacy from lockdown? All tracks were still getting the money from picture rights but saved on staff costs. Now they are open again, some of the smaller tracks are probably making less money.

It was really only the likes of Chester, York, Goodwood etc which missed the crowds. The likes of Lingfield on a wet Wednesday in November were probably glad there was no crowd there.

ARC’s pricing policy for an individual day at the races is a positive deterrent to one-off racegoers.

With their “fulfilment fee,” it can be over £30 to attend a bog standard ARC track meeting, whereas it was just a tenner at Epsom on Blue Riband Trial Day and only £20 at Sandown to see a load of Group races and Classic trials.

ARC just want to plug their annual badges, which right now are good value if you want to go all the time, but might not look so clever if a load of meetings go behind closed doors and go off limits even to badge holders.

What is that “fulfilment fee” about? The £20 I paid at Worcester was £17 with a £3 fulfilment fee added at the end of the booking. Why not just charge all the money up front.

Likewise, Wolverhampton is £14.50 (£11.50 plus £3). When I went last summer it was a £10 flat charge.

Maybe the writing is on the wall with that Lingfield idea?
Horse racing will go the same way as greyhound racing.

“What is that “fulfilment fee” about?”

All about charging £3 more without being upfront about it IMO.

Let’s hope so Purwell. It is free to get in at my local dog track for afternoon and morning meetings.

Someone on the radio was saying that festivals have also seen bookings fall sharply. Even Glastonbury took time to sell out

That’s another once a year outing for many of course and simply out of habit

It’s not the price or a burger or a booking fee (although they are irritating). The 80% that go once a year to racing don’t give a toss about those things

The rising cost of everyday things is biting. People who previously didn’t have to worry are now asking themselves if things like festivals and racing are justifiable expenses. Most people sit in that band between skint and loaded. Those at the lower end of that middle band are the ones I’m talking about.

They may not have cared if a pint is 7 quid or a burger is a tenner but the overall cost of the event adds up.

Not saying it’s the only reason by any means, it’s never a single thing, but it’s got to be a factor.

I saved myself £50 in fuel and admission by not bothering to go to Bredwardine Point in Herefordshire yesterday, and I’m saving a further £60 by giving Garthorpe in Leicestershire the swerve today.

I’m £110 in front on the weekend just by sitting on my backside here in Hampshire!

I won’t be the only one thinking that way.
