GC – I do a wee racing column on the website for a regional paper in the Borders and keep in touch with Lie Forrit’s connections through that and can confirm they’ve had the Cleeve as the plan for some time now.
Oh, undoubtedly, but there was also an abortive raid on Ireland over Christmas prior to that. Willie Amos was half-admonishing himself for making the effort to get the gelding across and then not run him because of a little unease about the ground, but could reconcile that with the fact that he can afford to be careful with a horse likely to be better than any other he’ll ever train.

January 30, 2010 at 07:48 #272857I think Katchit might just surprise everyone today in the Cleeve. I hope he wins! I also think Mr Thriller and Lough Derg may run good races – a lot of the others have too many question marks over them for me!

The Southern Reporter is the paper. I come from Wick originally (Watten to be precise). How do you know Caithness?Small world, cormack. We were one of the underbidders when The Southern Reporter bought their current offices in Selkirk, lovely building, wanted it as a house not offices.. we lived in the Selkirk area for 20 years, now live near Loch Ness.
………….and I went to school in Halkirk!!January 30, 2010 at 13:03 #272944I have an Uncle and Aunt in Halkirk CS.
Watch out for the monster (and I don’t mean Denman).
January 30, 2010 at 13:18 #272947Is there an Edwin in your family?
January 30, 2010 at 13:50 #272960Fair Along and Mr Thriller stand out in a competitive contest.
Fair Along saves his best for this venue (eleven win / place efforts from thirteen starts) and goes particularly well for the talented Rhys Flint. Slight concern with the ground, but he finished a highly creditable third in this race last year in heavy ground behind Big Buck’s and Punchestowns. If he runs anywhere near that form he’ll be hard to beat.
Mr Thriller appears to be a out-and-out stayer and will love the conditions. Showed his courage when rallying bravely to beat the classy Starluck at Haydock and David Pipe’s stable is in solid form.
My old pal, Tidal Bay, reverts to hurdles for the first time since 2007. We know the story with this fellow – if he runs to his very best, he’ll be therabouts. He’s the most talented horse in the field, but I’m not convinced three miles over timber is ideal.
Forget Plan B, connections have used up the entire alphabet with this chap!
January 30, 2010 at 14:31 #272974They’re finishing very tired today;don’t think this ground will suit Time for Rupert.
January 30, 2010 at 15:49 #273006Too many others with good chances to be risking the hard earned on though, especially on a complete nut case like Tidal Bay.
That complete nutcase is the only horse capable of giving Big Bucks a run for his money in the World Hurdle! He wont be 260 after tomorrow sunny Jim!
Watch and learn, watch and learn!
January 30, 2010 at 15:51 #273007Oh dear – we’ll never hear the end of this !!!
January 30, 2010 at 15:51 #273009Well done, old friend, well done.
How long have I stuck by this horse – only to desert him today?
To be honest, you could call him the winner a long way out. Didn’t he travel, and jump, well?
He can more than match Big Buck’s for talent and still available at double figures for the World Hurdle – massive ew value.
Great result.
January 30, 2010 at 15:55 #273011Bos – you didn’t exactly desert him –

January 30, 2010 at 15:57 #273012Glad to say the 14-1 on offer was too big to miss, 25 points ew and I’m laughing all the way to the bookies, puts me close to the 1400 point profit mark on ther season
Looks the biggest threat to Big Bucks
January 30, 2010 at 15:59 #273013Oh dear – we’ll never hear the end of this !!!
Corm can i change my name to "The Legendary Ante-Post King" now? or shall i wait till he wins the World hurdle!

I’m talking financially!
I’m not a big gambler, but I’ve always had a small wager on him. He turns up in a race at double figures and I don’t have a penny on him.
Still, I was watching him more than Fair Along most of the race! I’m just very happy to see him come back to his best.
Could Big Buck’s get hit by a tidal wave in March? Would be very interesting to see them jump the last together.
Who would your money be on in a scrap up the hill?

Tidal Bay (rec’d 4lb) beat a 151 h’capper 5l, which is a long way short of Big Bucks’ standard, and though his hurdling technique may improve a little, it’s difficult to see where he’s going to find around 20lb from.
It might also be worth bearing in mind that, though he looked impressive today, his jockey reported TB was "flat out" the whole way.January 30, 2010 at 17:15 #273045Tidal Bay (rec’d 4lb) beat a 151 h’capper 5l, which is a long way short of Big Bucks’ standard, and though his hurdling technique may improve a little, it’s difficult to see where he’s going to find around 20lb from.

Hughes was hard at work all the way round? Watch Tidal Bay on the home turn again. Hardly working overtime.
People were saying the same about Big Buck’s last year. How he wouldnt beat Kasbah Bliss and had loads to find – he then won with a little to spare in the Cleeve Hurdle and went on to win the World Hurdle with a superb turn of foot.
Let us remember that Big Buck’s started his hurdling career with a narrow win over Don’t Push It (also, in fairness, just a handicapper at the time)!
