Altough I will not be betting on the outcome ( I never bet on competitive handicaps ), I do think that Lie Forrit has a very good chance against this lot. He’s progressive, likes the track and ground conditions, and is tough as old boots.

reet hard suggested Tidal Bay. Good choice…I seem to be agreeing with everyone tonight…Tidal Bay 166 and Katchit 167 achieved by far the highest ratings in the field, Fair Along also 166 Lough Derg 163 but they the other two 8 lbs tomorrow.
Tidal Bay would be a World beater over fences if he could jump them, it’s amazing he’s never fallen, a tribute to his agility and he’s as game as they come. It’s hard to see him out of the first 3

PS,a message to "himself", I don’t bet on handicaps either but The Cleeve is a conditions race

For me this looks a good chance for Tatanen to fufil some of his undoubted talent. Although looking every bit the chaser he might be another Big Bucks (although not as good!) and find more luck over smaller obstacles. His fencing has let him down several times and I think this race has the perfect make up for a patient Ruby ride while Mr Thriller, Lough Derg and Fair Point set what is sure to be a testing pace.

Although he has disappointed given the hype surrounding him he has still shown enough in his last couple of runs to make me think he is still highly capable.

His run behind Seven is my Number can be forgiven as Ruby appeared to try and test SIMN’s stamina and it obviously didn’t work. He was then in the process of running a fair race under a big weight in a competitive handicap before making a mistake which halted his progress (slow though it was!).

I think the 16/1 currently on offer is very good value and I would certainly take that ahead of the 11’s on Tidal Bay.

He must have been a very expensive horse to follow, his best run since 2008 was 5th to Braker and he only beat one home that day

For the life of me I cannot see how that makes him a better EW bet than Tidal Bay whether on their chase form or hurdle form, Tidal Bay is stones his superior. And there are plenty of other with better chances, at least half the field in fact

"The term Good money after bad" springs to mind.
In my experience loyalty to a non performmer is the quickest way to the poorhouse….mine was called "Kingscliffe"… If you love the horse you’ll be delighted if he wins. If you love to win the bookies cash, think long and hard

I don’t think Mr Thriller particularly enjoyed Tony McCoy’s urgings at Cheltenham last time (as strange a race as it was) so the return of Tom Scudamore is a huge bonus. Given the manner of his victory at Chepstow, the strength of the Haydock run and David Pipe’s form, I fancy him to go close.

    Oops, my mistake CS.

Schoolboy-ish error. Must have been the quick glance at the field and noticing substantial amount of glorified handicappers among the entries.

In that case, Lie Forrit ( smallish stake :) )

GC – I do a wee racing column on the website for a regional paper in the Borders and keep in touch with Lie Forrit’s connections through that and can confirm they’ve had the Cleeve as the plan for some time now.

Karabak looks very much the standard to aspire to in this but plenty of the others have question marks and Lie Forrit has every chance of making the frame IMO.

Aspire to as in,if he had run he was the one to beat,or did you think he was running?

I think Fair Along is the one to side with in this. He’s the best horse in the race imo and anything near to his run in last year’s renewal of this race should see him there-abouts. 10/1 is a cracking price.

In response to CheltenhamSpecialist one of my main reasons for doubting Tidal Bay (even forgetting his quirks) is the fact the ground at Cheltenham tomorrow will be much slower than his preferred good ground.

This is a widely known fact and the following is a quote from Howard-Johnson in December "Tidal Bay wants goodish ground – nice jumping ground – and wouldn’t want it soft, so with the rain they’ve had over the past few days, we might have to wait".

I am fully aware that Tidal Bay is a classy horse on his day BUT his day is not over 3miles on soft ground!! If it were 2miles 5f on good ground at Aintree it would be a different story.

I don’t believe in following particular horses blind but instead selecting horses that have as much in their favour as possible.

Yes, aspire to in as much as I thought he was running TAPK!

Looking at runners/prices Fair Along looks cracking E/W at 10/1 but I very much hope that Lie Forrit can win it.

An open race and you can take it from many angles. Either upcoming handicappers in Time for Rupert and Lie Forrit; Established staying hurdles in Lough Derg or Fair Along; or those in retrieval missions in Tidal Bay and Tatenen.

Personally, I have been mighty impressed with Lie Forrit this year. He won at Cheltenham despite the race not being run to suit. Then hosed up at Newbury when they were strung out all over berkshire. The pace in this race with Fair Along and Lough Derg should be good and that is a definite plus.

Tidal Bay is a backup and Kennel Hill is a backup backup! Both have shown psychotic tendencies but also more ability than many of these.

Yes quite TAPK, unfortunately I have to do my Saturday column on a Tuesday to meet deadlines at which point Karabak was very much a contender.

    Cheltenham Specialist –
The Southern Reporter is the paper. I come from Wick originally (Watten to be precise). How do you know Caithness?
