Thanks Isinglass. According to the Kentucky Derby Museum Chant (1894) carried Navy Blue, white sleeves and cap. It appears there were two owners (Eugene Leigh and R.Rose) so maybe the set you have describeed were those of "the other" owner?

BTW I stumbled on this archive a few months ago and got very excited thinking I would find daily race cards with colours but failed miserably so thatns for unearthing this rich source of US colours.

Brilliant work Slewman, do please keep them coming.

One small point, the Darby Dan (Galbreath) colours appeared to carry a brown "double d" at one stage – certainly in the 60’s when they were carried to victory at Chruchill Downs by Proud Clarion and Chateaugay (those two also had the quartered cap we asscoiate with Roberto). Any idea why the "double d" was dropped by the time of Proud Truth’s victory in the BC Classic?

I don’t know the reason why John Galbreath (Darby Dan Farm) dropped the brown DD on the front jacket but i know he dropped it in the late 1960’s. A little bit of trivia, Galbreath at one time was also owner of the US Major league baseball team the Pittsburgh Pirates. John Galbreath’s son Dan Galbreath took over Darby Dan Farm with John W. advancing years. Dan Galbreath also raced many horses in his Brown and White Diamonds, White Sleeves, Brown Cap. John W. Galbreath purchased Darby Dan Farm which was originally Idle Hour Stock Farm from the legendary Colonel Edward R. Bradley who won four Kentucky Derbys.

One philosophical question I hope you can help with is the meaning of the general term "tartan". Many racing colours state precisely which tartan (Graham/Gordon/Blackwatch etc.) but can you advise which tartan should be used when only tartan (as for French Derby winner in 1863) is specified?

as for the "tartan" question , if I’ve found any colours that specifically mention the tartan used , I’d quote it – for the one you mention , all I went with was evidence of an old painting by Henry Hall which will be googleable ( !!! ) I’m sure. It’s one of those tartans that just looks like a very dark green from a distance – bit like Circus Plume in the 1984 Oaks ( McAlpine tartan in that case )

Previous posts on this site about US terminology helped greatly but still some things to decipher – are (shoulder) straps equivalent to epaulettes? Where and how big is a circle on a sleeve?
And of course the sunbursts, golden eagles, "star" on Super Saver’s colours etc are not so easy and so are omitted for now.

Your last posting has had plenty of us pondering these questions. To help I have attached some links to help you. As far as shoulder straps are concerned years ago in the US they use to be in laymans terms braces and a circle is of course a hollow circle while a disc is a large thick ‘spot’. Hi Isinglass,

Just a quick query re: the Binet silks.

In the 1979 Derby card they are listed as dark green, black hoop and sleeves, dark green cap black hoop.

Any idea what source you version comes from and why the discrepancy?
